Amp cell irons - good for beginner?

Hi all,

Had a quick question about Cobra Amp Cell irons and newer irons in general.

I've been playing golf for about 6 months and shoot around 100-110 on the average golf course in Brisbane, Australia.

When I started I grabbed some second hand Taylor Made irons from the trading post, they're R5XL plus's with regular 60gram graphite shafts.

I've quite taken to playing golf and have been thinking about getting some new irons.

However, there is quite a large difference in price between ordering a set of Amp Cell's from America from global golf or eBay compared to getting a set of irons from a store over here in oz. So I can potentially save a few hundred.

The questions is whether or not I'd notice any real change is forgiveness getting new or new/newish model irons compared to older ones? Or if it's mostly just a marketing gimmick. I think the R5xl's are from 2005-2006.

From what I've heard they are pretty good, haven't hit them myself.

Anyone hit the AMP Cell irons? Thoughts?

I thought the AMP Cell was fantastic. For a GI iron they look good, feel good and sound good. I don't like the Dynalite 90 but it was okay in this head. The Cell would be a monster with a heavier shaft. Not sure what to say about new v.s. old but I don't think I could play my previous irons without seeing some increased scores due to lack of forgiveness. My experience is the more forgiving an iron is the less distance lost on mishits. Real bad shots are going to be terrible regardless. It's so-so shots that benefit most from forgiving clubs. I've seen the Cell on eBay in the $220 range.

I have the amp cell irons, and I love them. Best clubs I've ever had, and I wouldn't trade them for  anything right now. I got mine off of ebay a year ago for $199, well worth it.

This was at the top of my list going into a Golfsmith. The salesman let me try them, and they felt great. However, he also said that the Biocells are on sale as well. The difference was only $50 just the week after Father's day weekend. The price on the Biocell's have gone up since, but it is possible that 4th of July sales are coming?

Which clubs were regular and which ones were stiff?


It was random.  IIRC, 4 was stiff, 5 and 6 were regular, 7 was stiff, 8 was regular and 9 PW and GW were stiff

That's kind of messed up, I would have thought that the long ones were regular and the shorter ones are stiff. :hmm:

Were they marked on the shafts accordingly, or did you have them measured?

They were marked on the shafts. I blame the store not the manufacturer. The salesmen were going to "cut me a deal" and I should have known better. I have not been back to that store

How's that been for your swing mechanics? :blink:

It sounds like they assembled a bunch of returned clubs together to make your set. Well, good you have a new set now.

It played havoc on my swing. I am basically starting from scratch which is probably a good thing. If you look at my thread in member swing you can see how much flex there is. I haven't posted a new video until I get used to my new sticks

I went to a golf store today and tried some Cobra Baffler XL's (they didn't have AMP cells). I tried the the regular flex stock shafts and they were so heavy for me I couldn't find any real rhythm swinging them at all.

I really prefer lighter, more whippy shafts. Will the Dynalites in the AMP Cells be much better?

Yes

I would stay away from the bafflers.  I would try another store, most places will have the amp cells or even check out the bio cells

      First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.

      What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛

      It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
