I recently had rotator cuff surgery and my surgeon is insisting when I return to golf that I do not take divots to avoid re-injury. Previously I would always take a divot after the ball. Some help on how  I might change my swing??

I had a complete overhaul done on my right shoulder and my Doctor advised me the same as you. I had just gotten to the point in my game that I was consistently taking a divot will all my irons so I figured if I took it slow and just practiced my swing around the house until the healing progressed enough to get back to actually golfing that I would be OK......., WRONG!!! I found out really quick that taking it easy around the house and hitting off a mat, (Optishot), was nowhere near what I would get myself into on the actual course. After "chunking" a few balls I felt like I had ripped my shoulder back apart and I believe it really impeded my healing process. I had to kind of sweep the ball for a long time after surgery and even now after a year and 8 months when I take to big of a divot I can really feel it in the shoulder and it takes me several days/weeks to get over it.

Hoping and praying for a speedy recovery for you bro....., I sure know where your at right now. God Bless!!!! Ray

I guess I should have been more specific. I was asking for help in changing my swing from taking a divot to picking the ball as per my doctors orders. All swing coaching seems to be hitting down on the ball as I was taught but now I need some opposite instructions. Any advise would be apprieciated.

Check into some of Nicklaus' books. He was a "sweeper", barely brushing the grass while still making good contact. It was the way I learned the game as a youth. Probably will mean playing more 'cuts' with the irons since that's easier to do.

Gary Edwin's "Right Sided-Swing" and Kiran Kanwar's Minimalist Golf Swing System both promote a shallow club path on all shots by keeping the right side in tilt prior to and throughout the downswing. Pro's using Gary Edwin's Right-Sided Swing actually have to flatten their equipment to get the true benefit of the sweep. My Ping G-25's are standard and my Titleist D-3 driver is a slight right bias draw 11 degrees and I hit the ball without divots with a slight draw (10 yards or less as clubs get shorter).

Details can be had from:  http://www.garyedwin.com or on YouTube in any of Kiran's 70 videos.

Good luck!

    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
