Definitely THE tournament this wee, the only one I'm DVR'ng, although I'll be watching to see how Speith does in his 1st title defense. Don't think Phil has a prayer; not in good form and little exposure to the Aberdeen course. Would love to see he and Rors compete.

Wow, Phil's shot off the cart path!

You can catch it here on the live blog if you missed it.

Also Rory with a 436 yard drive....no cart path...he's currently in the lead a 7 under, great shot into the 18th fairway as well.

Sixth oldest course in the world on what many regard as the best outward nine in Scotland - Enjoy

It's gorgeous, lovely way to start the day.

Although some big guns are done...Rory posts 64, Phil - 68, J. Walker - 71, Poulter - 73, Jimenez - 74

There's still some fun groups to watch. Right now Westwood, Rose, and Gallacher are paired together.

Also Rickie Fowler, Victor D, and Bjorn.

This is great confidence for Rory. He's playing great golf and next week is as well-suited a British Open as there is for him. It's a shot makers course and one of that long hitters will feast on with the four par-5s. If Rory is on his game next week, he's going to be tough to beat.

Phil hit one 380 today. Also, interesting tidbit, at least to me: noticed Luke D hit an RBZ Stage 2 3W off a tee but had a Mizuno cover on it. Heard this happens but hadn't noticed it til now.

hey LOOK

Rory had a great start and now is having trouble.  Who would have guessed that based on his play this year. :-X

It's early.

Maybe he's thinking of his model friend?

Yeah, McIlroy demonstrating his usual facility for being all over the place. Impossible to have any confidence in him, it's a long time since he strung together four solid rounds. Like the way Casey is playing.

The more I practise, the luckier I hope to get.

Man, I hope nobody bet on Rory after one good round yesterday. Funny how people like to jump on a bandwagon after one good round...makes no sense.

Same thing with Paul Casey...dude hasn't even had a top 25 (on the PGA) this year has he? He's had some decent rounds and some great stretches of 4-5 holes, but no real results. Yet, I've seen a few different people saying things like "how about that Paul Casey!" Maybe he is just a likable player?

Fun to watch the Euro guys play this course...looks pretty tuff to me. I don't know much about links golf, but it seems exciting because scoring is so volatile. Anything can happen!

[S][/S]Casey is a likeable guy, but as a betting man I'm not principally interested in his personality. What I like is that after a long period of being compromised by injury, he has started to play well. Leading for two rounds in the Memorial, on the leaderboard for quite a while in the US Open, now doing well in the Scottish. He goves the impression that one day soon he'll put three or four rounds together. McIlroy gives no such impression.

The more I practise, the luckier I hope to get.

Rory gave every single shot back. Even par on the tourney. Just ridiculous. Freaky Fridays indeed.

Plus Casey will be about ten times Rory's price with firms next week likely to be offering e/w terms on 6 places

Already backed him at 80-1 on Betfair. Currently 60-1.

The more I practise, the luckier I hope to get.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
