So I was shopping for my new bag last week and well walking around I decided to go test some putters. I had never hit a Scotty before and they had some out to demo so I figured why not try one.....mistake! I loved the feel, how the ball rolled with it and was draining putts from all over the practice mat. Now the question is, I shoot between 90 and 100 on 18 holes, typically 2 putt most greens, does my game deserve a $350 putter or will it benefit my game at all? I am happy with my current Ping putter so do I really need to drop the cash on a new putter? Did I really need the new bag that I bought that day to?

Putter is all about feel and confidence. If you are a lot more confident with it and also if you have the wallet for one then go ahead. If the club makes you happy then go get it!

Practice mat is one thing ... real life is another.

Having owned scads of Scotty's in my not-so-proud past, I'd say you will find better options. Oh, a Scotty looks pretty, rolls well, but it's not really set up for you over the long haul.

You want a putter that you aim correctly and one that helps you aim correctly - head shape and sight lines help. Weight and shaft help speed. There is a lot more to a putter than a name.

And once you get on that Scotty bandwagon, there is a chance you will not stop. The next model always looks better, like a cute girl giving you a come hither look and hiking up her skirt. And then ... it never ends  ... until the next affair.

Keep the Ping ... get a fundamentally sound and consistent stroke. get on a SAM Lab and analyze your stroke.

And psst, look at an Edel once you do that... because you will only buy one... because it fits you in every respect... you're married and you don't mind ... because you're in love ... and the sex (holing out) is great.

So are you asking me should one buy some golf equipment??? The answer is always YES!! :-)

j/k

Buyers remorse ... I have it all the time ...

I bought one, but then I feel I will own it for a loooong time ... so unlike a driver or irons ... which I replace every so often ... the putter is in the bag to stay ... that helped me with the $$$.

Also depends on your budget ... for some $350 is like taking a loan ... others can drop $350 without much impact to the bank account ...

but remember you can't buy a game ... at the end of the day you have to make a good stroke to get in the hole ... Scotty does not putt for you ... :-)

I have been actively trying to replace my putter for the past 4 years or so. I've demoed a majority of brands and styles out there in that time, and I can honestly say I have not found a putter that felt better or produced a better roll than my current putter. I would suggest only purchasing a new putter if you believe it feels better and produces better putts than your current flat stick.

I always wanted a Scotty until I actually hit a few of them and realized they were no where near anything I felt comfortable gaming, so don't get caught up in the glamour or prestige associated with a certain brand just look for a putter that performs.

Only you can really tell if a Scotty is for you and if you want to spend the money on it. They are very nice!

I had a half dozen and none ever felt the same on the green as they did in the store. It was more about owning one or two or three of them. I play a Ping now and would not trade it for anything we had a great thing going.

Mr D and many on here play Edel due to how they are fit for that person. I would have  gone to them next if my Ping was just not so great!

I hear ya guys..... I don't need a  new one. I actually do stroke mine pretty well. I have only 3 putted a hand full of time and it was not the putters fault by any means. I do like my Ping putter, it may be the Super Stroke 5.0 Fatso that has me double guessing at times.

Good call.

Re-Grip it. I've got the same doubts w/ my SuperStroke. May go back to a round grip with several wraps.

I have 4 Scotty Camerons putters in my garage. All are either gifts, or won at tournament raffles. All are at least 5 years old. My game putter is a very old Never Compromise putter. I couldn't even tell you what model it is with out looking. Why the cheapie putter over the Camerons'? Because I make more putts with the NC putter. It's old and banged up, but still does the job for me.

The Camerons are a great putter. They are a quality golf tool. But, with my NC putter, I can hit the ball any where on the face and I still get a straight roll of the ball as long as I have the correct grip, correct aim point, and put a decent stroke on the ball.

There is a test I do with all putters. I will hit the same putt off the face in three locations. Heel, middle, and toe. If the ball rolls straight off of those three impact locations, then I consider that putter a user friendly, mis-hit, forgiving putter. If the ball pulls ,or pushes due to an off center hit, then it's MOI is suspect. I am assuming the term MOI is still valid in today's golf.

Call me old school, but the price of any club, from high to low, does not automatically make it a stroke saver. I also recommend that a new putter be fitted to the golfer, just like any other club in their bag.

I just got my first scotty recently! After only ever owning 2 putters, neither being expensive or well known, I have to say I'm loving it! Of course I can only compare it to two other putters, but the weight, look, feel and ease of stroking the ball is better than I've ever known! I love pulling it out of the bag, it's given me a confidence in putting I've never had before and that alone is worth the price! I agree it's not about the price, I got mine used, mint, for a 3rd of the retail price, if I'd known the of the sudden improvement it gave me I possibly would have paid full price, but I have to admit, since I got it, (2 weeks ago) I've practised with it for 10 mins every night, which also builds confidence and costs nothing! So to answer the op, if you really like it? Treat yourself! Get it! It's nice to have nice quality equipment, but you still gotta learn to use it!

I had the same grip on my Scotty's but have keep the stock grip on my Ping. Never found a reason to change it and when I need to re-grip will put another stock Ping on it.

It just works!

Tiger kept a blacked-out Ping grip on his Camerons throughout his career. Have no idea what he uses on the Nike putter -- not interested.

I only changed because I like to keep both thumbs on top and thought I'd like the room the SuperStroke offers.

I have a friend that has 2 dz putters min and the one he carries is an old Ping that makes that funny ping sound when you hit it. I understand it is a very hard to find putter and looks like it has been in a war. He play for the collage and Jr PGA but that is the putter that works for him.

Good luck what ever you decide don't let your self get caught up in having to have a Scotty or any club. Get what works for you, the object is to score low and have fun.

I recently purchased by 2nd Scotty (Futura X).  I also have the older Futura.  I think it is a great putter and an improvement.  But if you aren't sure about a Scotty, check out the Bettinardis.  They are great as well.  But I've had some solid less expensive options.  But to me, you can feel the difference b/w a cheaper putter and a Scotty, Bettinardi, or any other premium putter.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
