Let me start by saying: I've never been a big fan of Nike balls.  For the last 3 years I've floated between Callaway's Hex Chrome and the (+) version as my regular gamers.

After hearing some great reviews of Nike's new RZN lineup, I decided to give them a try for myself.  I bought a dozen of the White which tout "softer feel", and a dozen of the Red which claim "longer carry".  I proceeded to play 36 holes with them over the weekend.  I played two balls on most shots, hitting one, followed by the other to effectively compare performance.  About the tester:  I'm a 31 year old player with a 8 handicap, with a 90-95 mph Driver clubhead speed.  Not a long-baller, but a solid short game and iron player.  I can move the ball both directions comfortably, but my "stock shot" is a strong draw, with enough backspin and trajectory to make a 4-iron hop once and then stop.

For the test, I played two different courses with two different sets of challenges.  The first course (Saturday) was lush, with a 10-15 mph breeze for most of the round. Greens were like dartboards, and the course plays fairly short and open.  The second course (Sunday) plays a little longer, with narrow fairways, lots of trees, and greens like a tiled floor, and NO wind at all.  Temperature was in the mid 80s both days, with high humidity.  I'm focusing on overall results, rather than specific clubs.

The feel of the balls is distinctly different.  A simple bounce test with each model shows a unique sound to each one off the floor.  The White has a soft, muffled thud, while the Red has a distinct, but not overly loud, "click".  This same sound transferred over into impact....making it easy to distinguish which ball I was striking without having to look to confirm.

On longer shots, the differences between the two balls was most noticed.  With the driver, the Red would launch higher than the White, with it's peak trajectory being 15-20 ft higher in flight.  The White would launch lower, but seemed to "float" through the air with a bit more backspin.  Both balls were fairly easy to maneuver and "flight" however I wanted.  On shots that were struck the same, I would usually find the balls within 10-15 feet of each other.  The RZN White would fly lower, land, and roll out quite a bit, whereas the RZN Red would carry farther, with a steep descent and less roll.  Overall distance on longer shots was nearly identical on average.  However, in a headwind, the Red was a bit more prone to "ballooning" than the White.....likely due to the higher launch angle.  This was worth noting.

Approach shots yielded similar results.  On wedge approaches inside 100 yards, it felt as though the Red would pop up in the air, and come down soft with little roll.  It almost seemed as if I was hitting flop-shots rather than traditional approaches!  The White would come in a bit lower, hop once, and stop.  Both balls were fairly easy to control, even on the second day with it's slicker greens!  I wouldn't describe either of these balls as having excessive rollout on chips or pitches.

Off the putter face, the distinct "click" of the Red made it a personal preference over the muted "thud" of the White.

Overall, both balls are great.  My initial concern was that the Red would be too hard to stop and spin around the green (as is the case with most "distance" balls)....this proved to not be an issue.  After 36 holes of testing, I can confidently say that the new Nike RZN Red or White could be finding it's way into the bag as my new Gamer!

I hit the RZN Red this weekend a few times. Not enough to rate it really but I found theball to balloon a little with the irons. I hit a few drives that I felt were crushed and I was surprised at the lack of distance. I'll play it next week in league to give it a real test. Also, I played a Titleist NXT Tour S during a match this weekend and liked the results. Not positive how I liked the stopping ability on the greens. Most of the greens at this course had hidden landing areas.

That's what I was noticing.  I play a high trajectory already, and the Red started to Balloon on some shots.  I'd just be watching and saying to myself "Man, that thing is really UP there"......however, I didn't notice a lack of distance, just a lack of roll...whereas the White would go just as far, but with more roll and less carry.

I'm going to my practice facility today to play 9 holes and hit the pitching/chipping range......as of right now I'm really leaning towards the White.

This is a pretty good review. Have you thought to put it in our user reviews section?

    • Day 9 - (9 Jun 26) - Weekly nine hole session with my good friend, I played again from one set of tees up from my usual (set up the bag 4h, 6i-Pw, Gw, Lw) to focus more on iron play in the approaches (esp longer ones on the 4's and 5's).  Used the hybrid for tee shots only, had to play irons in from there on....made for a great work on course management and dealing with iron shots I normally don't see.  Key focus was on keeping ball in play, playing to distances that set up for either GiR or nGiR's.  Played a split nine (5 on the front, 4 on the back - the turn works nicely as both nines turn and run parallel coming in - easy to jump from 5 to 15 (especially when the course is not busy)).  Worked with my friend on his course management skills - offering thoughts as a "caddie" might and helping him to confidently choose and execute the shot he was seeing.
    • Interesting that you post this - was playing today with my good friend in our typical weekly nine-hole round.  He has a lot of chatter in his mind, most of the time, yet today was much improved.  Yes, he went through a number of swing thoughts (like the ones highlighted), but then you could almost hear the switch click off - it was like when I shot the distance, and said its "X yards", he confidently said "this club should cover that..." and made his shot most of which were nicely rewarded.   Came away shooting one of his best nine-hole rounds ever.  For me, I do have thoughts  - not in terms of negotion but rather evaluation.  What is the wind doing?  Is there trouble - left, right, middle - not that I am a great fader or drawer of the ball?  Where is the better landing spot/zone?  What is my target window and what in the distance helps me see it?  I wonder if the "negotiation" is more about not understanding "typical distance for a given club (carry and roll)" and more about remembering how that flushed 5i that went and went or how the 4i that can get there with but not reliably or accurately.
    • God I hate when golf can’t give me n+1 day of success. Drives me up the wall when my body is, FU! Im like, ok let’s check the vid. Yep too much turn, arms getting behind me. Ok, I work on that. Get the feel back for a shorter swing. Confirm with video. Then going back to arms down stuff.  Arms down, nope it’s hands out towards the ball. Oh, you get arms down better. Guess what, you don’t get to rotate and you hit 6 inches behind the ball. Yay!  Maybe I should have walked off the range and not wasted my time. I wish there was a body alert system when it’s going to a SOB for the day. 😭 OK rant over, I’ll be back at this tomorrow.

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.
