I disagree. In terms of personality, Rory is the new Gary Player - quiet, thoughful  and friendly.

Are you trying to use irony here?

Gary Player is quite possibly the most egotistical player that ever lived!!!!!

Do a bit of reading about what he was like when he was traveling around with Arnie and Jack, and what they had to say about him.

Read about tyne nightmare that is playing with him in a pro-am.

Read about his miraculous ball finding skills and club selections and changes that lead to great lie in the rough.

Listen to any interview he's ever given.

What planet are some people living on!!!!?????

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Well as long as it doesn't involve a straight driving competition the audeince will be safe from Tiger I'm inclined to say that since they're both signed to Nike, they probably are competing for something. Interesting to see how the normally personable Rory compares against cold Tiger. If Rory goes through the Irish gears seamlessly he could look like the refreshing new face. Tiger's often detached and humourless personna could look very old-fashioned very quickly. Expect RC banter though. Having said that, Tiger might feel more comfortable yet and loosen up a bit

In that environment, Tiger will be great. He puts up a wall for sure but I've seen him in enough informal sessions to think he's probably an engaging funny guy away from the cameras. And, he's not afraid to be a little self-deprecating, which is how the bit will probably go down. He'll acknowledge Rory's recent greatness, kid about how bad he's been, then remind Rory that the King (not Arnie) still reigns. I'd love to tee it up with him. He'd probably rip me mercilessly for my ugly swing but if I ever picked up a skin on him (it could happen), I'd rip him back. I'm certain it would be a blast.

I've always thought Player to be an insufferable bore and a shameless egotist. I saw him a few weeks ago chalenging a Sky contributor to try to match his sit up count, and whie its impressive that a man of his age is so fit its not unreasonable to expect that he would also have learnt some humility and graciousness. What he thinks are fortright views and bluntness are quite often boorish and offensive insults.

Player's workouts look like they come from comic books. I am surprised he doesn't suffer from more injuries than Tiger. The only competition that would be safe for Tiger on the Fallon show would probably be putting. Rory will spank Tiger though.

Great point.  It seems as we get further from someone career, the less we remember the bad parts.

“I am a South African, a nation which is the result of an African graft on European stock and which is the product of its instinct and ability to maintain civilized values and standards amongst the aliens'.”
Gary Player

Now Gary comes from Jo'burg and is a product of a different era. Ernie comes from the western cape which is much more liberal. I couldn't imagine Ernie saying anything like this

I will just go with what I personally witnessed at the 3M tournament a couple weeks ago. Gary Player was quite possibly the most entertaining, genuine celebrity I've ever seen. I followed Jack, Gary,  Arnie, and Trevino for an hour before it started, then through 18 holes, and then an hour after they were done. At times Jack and Arnie could be a bit cold to people, don't get me wrong they were still great. But Gary Player was something else. I swear he thanked every single person there, I've never seen such a jolly old man.

I don't care from now on what anyone says about Gary because I'm going to go with what I personally saw over those 5 hours. I saw a Gary Player that could really play to the crowd, and I saw Jack sulk a little bit about it.

I know Player has an ego, that day it was a competitive ego. He knows he's one of the greats, but to me he was the greatest as a person, not just a golfer.

    • I kind of like this interpretation especially if you think about it the unplayable rule would probably put you in a better spot.  using back on the line releief.
    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
