The news is wherever you want to find it.

Quote:

Oscar winner and comedian Robin Williams died this morning at 63. While his publicist wouldn’t confirm that it was a suicide, they did issue this statement. “Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”

Williams, who won an Oscar for his supporting role in Good Will Hunting , will reprise his role as Theodore Roosevelt in the third installment of Night at the Museum this December. He had recently signed on to reprise his beloved role as Mrs. Doubtfire in a sequel to be directed by Chris Columbus and was last seen opposite Annette Bening in the indie film The Face of Love .

According to a press release issued by the Marin County Coronor’s office, the Sheriff’s office suspects the death to be “suicide due to asphyxia.” The 9-1-1 phone call came in just before noon today.

I guess I can cancel the season pass I had to The Crazy Ones .

I'm saddened by suicides, and I realize I don't understand them, but a little part of me always thinks poorly of the person for taking their own life. It's such a cheap, thoughtless way to go that shows so little respect for your loved ones. But again, I realize that I don't understand it, so in the end I'm conflicted about all of that.

The ****? I did not know. Now I do, that sucks. I agree suicide seems kind of like a cowards way out...It could be a much more complicated thing than that though...

Are we 100% sure about this? Seems that celebrity deaths have been faked and picked up and run with by social media an awful lot in the past few years. Edit* Just looked around, seems to be widely reported by more or less reputable news agencies. Very sad. While I wasn't much of a fan of his later work I'll never forget his brilliant portrayal of Garp. Other highlights were Dead Poets Society, Moscow on the Hudson and Good Morning Vietnam. Suicide is just such a sad, sad statement. I hope his soul finds peace.

As far as the internet is concerned, Eddie & Jackie are no longer with us...I don't think this is fake..his publicist confirmed it...

Sad to hear ... Some folks see no other way out ... I would not call it a cowards out ... It may not be your option, but we do not know his inter struggles ... And what options he felt he had ...

Haven't heard suicide reported yet, though they did say he was suffering from depression.... Saw him twice in person. A brilliant talent. Sad.

Always hard to figure that somebody that most of us think has success and money could be depressed.

Like Erik I don't understand depression so I try not to judge it. He also had a history of addiction.

Good Will Hunting and Good Morning Vietnam are always on my DVR and when there's nothing much else on I watch them again (for the ????th times).

Jesus, I can't believe how sad this is making me. I didn't know him, I wasn't even that big of a fan, but **** me, I grew up with him. Another stone torn from the walls of the Camelot that is youth.

He was the same age as my father... I always thought he was older.... I know he had a crazy life, lots of drugs and stuff. I actually think it's pretty common for comedians to have depression issues.

Wow, this is truly awful news. He was one of the few comedians I actually liked. He was a very talented individual. Truly, a shame.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
