36-hole Stroke play tournament coming this weekend, its always a grind to have to play every hole, putt everything out.  So often I play match play, and stop when I've lost a hole or get to ESC.  Every year we have a few horror stories, hole scores of a dozen or more.   Gotta keep the ball on the golf course, keep calm, and I'll be fine.

Survived day one, 78.  A couple of unforced 3-putts, but more made longer putts.  I worked last night on swinging under control, maybe 85%, and the ball seemed to be flying 110%, but I got up and down a few times.  We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Played in couples championship today, 40-37-77, came in low gross with my wife but found out right before it started that they decided that they were only paying low net, no low gross.

So I am the lowest male handicapper and my wife is one of the lowest lady handicappers. Needless to say we finished middle of the pack.

A little perturbed that they didn't pay at least one gross spot, like last year, along with the 9 net spots and they didn't mention it until right as we we're getting ready to play.

In order for us to win, I would've needed to shoot 65 as my wife only cut me on one hole. Or she would've needed to cut me 5 additional shots.

Some of the players felt I was being petty as they don't have a chance to win gross so why should they pay a gross spot when only 3 or 4 teams can win gross. There were others that felt that they should've had at least one or two gross spots.

A couple of the guys pretty much told me the couples is for net and if I wanted to play gross go play somewhere else. Of course there is no couples thing gross to play in.

So others who have played couples, what say you?

Well, I played in the Newman Club Championship this weekend.

Round 1: Craptacular chipping and a 9 on the first hole and a 10 on the tenth hole (both par 5s). Shot 98... Ended up in the 2nd flight... I look like a 36 hdcp when I chip especially short sided.

Round 2: A little better... 6 shot improvement over day one. Shot 92. My chipping sucked... My driving was so bad, I was almost ready to have Alina drive for me... I hit 3/14 fairways... (Erik, I know LSW talks about distance over accuracy), I was probably 90 yards left off the tee on the sixth and made par. I was in a tree on 1 and made par. I even made bogey from an unplayable on 10... Just 7 pars, 5 bogeys, 3 doubles and 3 triples. I did make 3 semi normal pars on 16, 17, 18.

Gotta work on chipping and figure out the driver before Conklin on Saturday.

Well, I posted one decent round on Saturday, but Sunday was a different story.  I played pretty well on the front, 37 after a bogey-double start.  I was hitting everything solid, putting pretty nicely, feeling OK  Then I started hitting drives left.  Not scary left, just left enough to be in a little trouble, awkward lies in the rough, leading to a few bogeys.  Then all of a sudden, I skull a side-hill 5-iron into a hazard.  My next, a decent wedge, bounces just over the green into a horrible lie in the rough, and I make 7.  On the next hole, a par 5, I'm in perfect shape after 2, and skull a wedge to a tough lie in the rough, try unsuccessfully to get close with the pitch from a bad spot....double.  A nice sandy par 3 on the next, then another tee shot left, lost.  Another 7.  Not sure exactly what happened, but I finished well back in the pack.

On the plus side, we do a separate entry for closest to the pin on all the par 3's, and I won for the 201-yard 6th both days.  And even though I played bad, my wife let me go with her to a concert on Sunday night.

On the "gotta do better" side, in just 2 weeks we have our Senior Club Championship, another 36-hole stroke play event.  I gotta find a way to play more than 9 or 10 holes of good golf at a time.

This line actually cracked me up.  I'm picturing your wife actually considering not bringing you to the concert and forcing you to convince her that you tried your best or something.

This is one of the very few issues that comes from having a wife who plays golf.  She isn't shy about reminding me when she's played better than I have, especially at tournaments.  On the plus side,  I play a whole lot more golf, especially on vacation, than I would if she didn't play.

I would tend to think of a couples tournament as a "fun" event with handicaps and/or flights. Still, changing the format and eliminating any gross award after everyone signed up was inappropriate.

About two weeks until the club championships at good ole Kittyhawk. Going to stop playing my secondary courses for a bit and concentrate on the Hawk and Eagle.  A bit of practice also might go a ways to avoiding last year's crapfest.

You are playing much more solid this year, I've no doubt you'll have a much better showing.

Thanks. The full swing is getting more solid. Oddly, the short-game stuff has gone to pot in just the past few weeks. Always something.

I've only played the past two weeks and not practiced. Hopefully some quality time will help sort those wedges out.

Our Senior Club Championship is in two weeks as well, also a 36 hole stroke play.  Losing the driver accuracy sucks, been that way for me as well, just a couple times a round, but enough to stop having a good score.

So we had our Senior Championship this weekend. I managed  keep all but one shot on the golf course, made a few really good shots, sank  few putts, and shot 75-73. That was three strokes off the gross champ, but my 136 was 3  strokes clear of the next lowest net . So I'm the new Stoneleigh net old-guy champ.

:banana::dance::banana::beer:

Of course, not to be upstaged, my wife shot 79 (62) in the ladies championship (they only play 18) for low net, so  we have two champs in the house tonight

Congrats!  (I had to go back and give a thumbs up to a random post just because for you and your wife, this one deserves two!!!)

So finally I am getting into our CC tourneys. Played in a 16 person two man team (actually one man one woman team) - net Stableford yesterday and came in 3rd. Blew my points quota by 9 nine points so I will have an adjustment next month.. lol!

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
