now, just playing Devils Advocate here for a second -

if you overheard someone giving someone else COMPLETELY WRONG information, would you speak up?  like after the adviser left the advisee, would you go over to the advisee and tell him to disregard everything the adviser told him to do?  i ask because i was extremely tempted to do so the other day.  this old guy was giving just GARBAGE advice to a guy that was clearly struggling to follow what he was saying and i really wanted to tell him afterwards what a complete clown the old guy was....

Perhaps.  But only if I was 100% certain that the advice given was unsolicited and from a stranger also.  But even then it's not a guarantee, because I might be putting myself on the spot to give out some counter advice, and I don't know shit!!

My tip I give out is to check out the 5sk website. I usually leave it at that.

Golf is like new personal trainers. They have been working out for three months and become so enthralled with working out that they want to take the PT test. After that they want to help everyone in the gym...

If someone isn't capable of telling the dolt to bug off I wouldn't feel it was my duty to protect them. Really wouldn't matter anyway. Most of the people I see at the range are just random ball beaters that probably try to change something every time they are there.

Here there is only one local range with decent enough balls to practice with. Fortunately it's a former private club with mostly older clientele. That is the only place I go to practice and not once have I seen anyone walking around giving advice.

Dave :-)

Probably not, I may have overheard what was said but I don't typically insert myself into situations where I'm not involved.  There are a large number of golf swing theories out there and I'm not qualified to dispute what someone else is saying even if I believe it's wrong.

I have to concur with this..  I'll just concentrate on what I'm working on!

It's a double edged sword. Even though I completely disagree with unsolicited, counterproductive advice, I wouldn't delve myself in a situation that doesn't include me. If someone was giving a struggling golfer bad advice I wouldn't try to correct that advice unless I was asked to. Even then, I would only give a tip that was universal in golf as I'm not qualified to go much further than that.

Depends upon the advice. If he said something that could be dangerous, I would say something. Otherwise, I wouldn't really know what to say. I'm too busy working on my own priorities at the moment.

Yeah, it's kind of like two people giving unsolicited advice. One that contradicts the other. Not sure if it would help the prospective golfer.

Agree.

Although if I walked by the guy and he looked at me, I'd be tempted to say, "Did that guy help you?"

  • 9 months later...

Went to the range late today because the weather and having to get some things done around the house.  I usually try to go off to the sides to avoid the crowds, which I did today.  A guy I'd never seen down there before followed right behind me and took the stall right next to me which I thought was strange since there were 5 empty stalls to the left and right of me, but no problem.  I start to warm up and was hitting balls and I notice he's trying to duplicate every shot I make.  I usually start out with my 56* wedge and hit to the flag that's 110 yards out, he started hitting an iron to around 150 yards but quickly switched to a wedge and aiming for the same flag I was.  I thought it was coincidence but when I started hitting a 7i he did the same, then switched to hybrid and driver right after I did.

I didn't really care what he was doing except for every time he'd hit a shot worse than mine he'd slam his club and curse out loud.  He never said a word to me, just kept trying to outhit me the entire session.   When we got to driver he couldn't stop slicing and I kept watching him because I was concerned a snapped driver head was going to be flying past me at some point from him slamming it into the mat.

This is when you start busting out the trick shots. I'd hit a few balls with my back to the target, then a few one-handers and see how he responds.

Did he leave the range at the same time, too?

:-O

(yes, an unstated range contest with the nearby stall shows issues i.e. creepster)

Yes, he did, fortunately he was parked in the opposite direction from me so he didn't follow me to my car.

It was really awkward.  He was a lefty too so it was like he was trying to completely mimic me and my shots.  What threw him off a bit was that I was trying to shape the ball (as per the shape the ball thread) so 1 shot would be a fade, then straight and then a draw to different targets.  His back was to me, so he couldn't see me changing my body alignment (probably just thought I had bad dispersion) but whenever he hit anything but a straight ball or if his ball didn't travel as far as mine he'd slam his club and curse.  When he hit it straight and further than I did, he'd spin his club like Rory does.

This is when you start busting out the trick shots. I'd hit a few balls with my back to the target, then a few one-handers and see how he responds.

I have enough problems with my regular shots, so no trick shots for me.

Ok so the other day I was golfing with a great group of people I had been paired up with as a walk on. This young guy was obviously new to the game and, while parts of his swing were ok for a beginner, he swung the club while cupping his right wrist, which kept the club face massively closed throughout his swing. He also pointed his club faces to the ground and insanely closed addressing the ball. He did this with his 9 degree driver and was drilling the ball into the ground and way left every tee shot. He was so upset the entire round and a family member kept scolding him on "trying to kill the ball" and "not leaning forward enough" on his shots." So we have a guy pointing his driver into the dirt, with no wrist hinge (actually the opposite), and the most closed club face at address I ever seen. He started arguing with the family member that kept telling him he wasn't leaning forward enough. So I broke my rule on the 18th as I was walking with him. I said "I never do this but do you mind if I show you something?" He said sure and I pulled his driver out of the bag and said "you are getting the ball exactly where you are aiming." He was shocked. I demonstrated it to him. Then I told him to ignore everything the family member had told him bc he is just going to hit the ball into he dirt even more. He seemed grateful so hopefully I did the right thing. He was getting so angry and the issue was plain as day.

I was at a nearly empty driving range in NJ this morning, and some of the golfers switched stalls every shot. Very strange, I figured it was just a New Jersey thing? @Billchao I think this is your home course. :-D

You were at Hyatt Hills this morning? Technically, Ashbrook is my home course, but I play different courses all the time. BTW, if you're on mobile, you have to use the function to mention someone. You can't just type @Lihu like you do on the computer because it doesn't work :-)

    • Interesting that Scottie is #10 on the all time money list and he's been on the PGAT for 4 years. Of course, purses are bigger now, but  neat to look at non-the-less.  The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises This list is updated through the 2024 RBC Heritage. To add, Scottie won 4.5 million at the Players, Jack played 44 seasons and won a little of 5 million on course.
    • 43 (6 over) Couple bogies, couple Pars, a birdie and no doubles. Not bad for first 9 of the year.
    • Most the stuff I found on Instagram and just copy and mix it up. a few of my favorites: Clean>Squat>Press> March Around the body >catch >Squat> press I also hold a the kettle bell upside down with both hands on the handle. Squat when I stand back up I lift the kettlebell up over and behind my head and hold then repeat
    • Not sure this is the best thread but, if the rain holds off, today is my 1st round of the year.  Getting ready I can not find my Shot Scope.  I guess I put it away too well for the winter and thus that is may "Winter Depression".  I'm sure I put it somewhere that made sense at the time.
