My swing has gotten fairly consistent but I've noticed that my dispersion (distance wise) was wider than I thought it should be, +-10 yards.  I didn't think the problem was with my swing so I placed some impact tape on my irons and observed where I was hitting the ball on the club face and relating that to distance.

It appears that a majority of my strikes were towards the toe and represented a higher percentage of the shots that flew shorter distances.  On the strikes that flew longer (and higher) impact was center of the club face or slightly more towards the shaft.

I found that by changing my address so that I was closer to the ball I could more consistently hit the ball towards the center and shaft which resulted in longer distance.  The change also improved my dispersion and I plan to test more today but I was wondering if the sweet spot is the same for every iron and why more emphasis isn't placed on knowing the sweet spot and verifying you're hitting it.

Sounds like the "Powder the Face" example from a book I wrote… :D

Good idea to check this stuff, though.
