I know that all of us need to find the "feels" that help use do the right things in our swings. I found this video by John Dunigan.

His point #4 about how the head is kept still really explained to me how this feels. I have been trying this at home and

I can get the club back to a good position and move my weight forward in the downswing much easier thinking

about the side bending and extensions he talks about. I will take this to the range this weekend and see how it does.

Any comment would be appreciated. And I know 5SK is not S&T; but Steady Head is.

Went to the range today to practice pitching and chipping. Used what I learned from this site and LSW. I made the most improvement

on my chipping. The chipping technique I learned fro LSW was so easy to learn. And it worked so well. I have never been able

to be consistant with my chips as I was today. Here is results of me chipping from just off the green from about 30 ft away.

I know they are not all that close but believe me this is an improvement.

The pitching was great too. I had practiced the move in my yard but this is the first time I tried it on the course.

The range I went to has an elevated pitching practice area. so I was hitting balls from about two to three

feet blow the green surface. I was hitting shots that just got to the edge of the green and rolled out and

shots that went higher and landed softer and nearer the hole.

Very productive practice.

Went to the range today working on my pieces with the 5S's. It was a drizzly rain but I don't care I was there to improve not

worry about a couple rain drops.

I am doing better. I am shifting my weight to the left leg better. I only fatted a couple shots out of about 40. Was topping for

a while till I fixed that.

Confirmed something I had thought was true. It is tension in my swing that is causing some of my issues. Near the end

today I started visualizing my ball flight and direction. Wow I hit several the I said to my self were going over

a flag in the distance and they did. This got my mind going in a different direction and removed the tension.

My fating problem occurs when I move my right knee toward the ball on the down swing. What is a drill I can

do for that and/or explain the tripod drill better. The video is not that helpful. A face on view of it would be good.

Any comment would be appreciated. And I know 5SK is not S&T; but Steady Head is.

Here's another good video on how the body works to keep the head steady. I want to point out that this is more of an overall understanding, not a description of what every player should feel. We feel that S&T; puts too much emphasis on the spine tilting and extending, a lot of that is coming from the lower body. Focusing too much on the spine can cause the head to move.

Played 18 today. But it was really two nines. A 58 on the front and a 48 on the back.

I was pull hooking everything on the front and hitting chips and pitches across from on side of the green to the other.

I could not figure out what I was doing wrong.

On the 9th hole I realized I was not keeping my left arm straight in my back swing. I straightened out my drive.

I got better on my short game and was putting good all day. Lots of one putts.

I will have to post some video soon. Maybe tomorrow.

Here is my feeble attempt at pitching. It looks to me like I am not letting gravity do any of the work. The results of these are bladeing.

Try making right hand only pitches. You will take the club back then just pivot around your left knee. With only one hand on the club the clubhead should just fall to the ball. Looks like you are still trying to guide the clubhead, and have too much flip. The pitching move is more smooth.

Thanks. I will give that a try. I feel like my right arm is contributing too much. Too much hit thought. I even tried taking my right index finger off the grip and that helped a little. It did not help that I tried using this on the course the other day. I had a couple holes that I hit the ball back and forth across the green. I haven't done this since I started golf. I am going to stick with my COG method till I perfect this.

i know nothing.................but ......you could try to widen your stance by a 5 or 6 inches and move the ball back to the middle or a ball before the middle. feel like you are leading the club head with the back of your left hand.

works for me and gives nice crisp, ball first contact.....hope it may help you

Moving the ball back in the stance only promotes a steeper angle of attack. This in turn will required him to be even more accurate. A good pitch shot is played with the ball middle of the stance and forward, with a gliding motion to allow the bounce to engage the ground. The bounce then gives some clearance on mishits because it doesn't allow the club to get stuck in the ground because the leading edge isn't interacting with the ground.

When I play pitch shots the ball is off the inside of my right foot.

i think its a feel and confidence thing. if he's flipping at it i would have thought that playing the ball ahead of the low point would be tough for him.

also it depends on what you want from the chip-using the bounce to get it airborne isnt going to give you that 'one bounce and check' type of shot - which would be my preference. perhaps i should have asked what type of chip shot he was after rather than offering an alternative thought.

It does depend on what he is trying to play, if by flipping at it you mean the club head over taking the hands at the point of impact then this is going to happen naturally playing the pitch shot, not so much so playing the chip you are talking about..

The issue is, moving the ball back is counter intuitive. When you move the ball back the shaft lean is more forward. Now you have no lee way at all but to hit the ball first. Moving the ball back doesn't make it 100% certainty you will. In doing so most golfers will start to flip because they do not want to chunk it, so they try to nip it clean.

He's not practicing chipping, he's practicing pitching. For general short game shots you basically want to hit simple pitch shots. Those shots you do not want to have the leading edge coming into play.

@iacas these videos were taken early this past week before I saw Mike. Yes it was great to be able to get a quick one on one lesson at gate 109. :-)

I am going to use the tips he gave me and post some more video to see if I am getting it. I told him that I would post these ugly videos.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
