Let's close this tonight. Midnight pacific time. That's currently 11 weeks of avatar- and user-title-changing (each person gets one week) when you fail and $110 if the laws of physics cease to exist on your stove for three seconds.

Sorry. Not possible.  Maybe his legs were mid shin, but the ball certainly wasn't.

By the time the club head hit the ball it would have slowed down to nothing.

There is no way possible the club could hit the ball hard enough and then have the ball come out with all the resistance of the water on the club and the water on the ball.

Can I get in on this?

Sounds like a good experiment for the summer time and a kiddie pool with 1 foot of water in it... and a golf ball at the bottom. There should be a camera recording your swing, one in the pool recording the ball, and one in the target zone.

GoPro makes some waterproof enclosures for their cameras. This would be cool to see.

You have to wonder why people AREN'T in, don't you?

The funniest thing is that @MS256 explained how to do it  - and, amazingly pointed out that you hit almost vertically  - as if this was a tip for skeptics.

Surely a long flat square approach from 2 feet behind the ball is the answer. You need to maximise clubhead speed and let the loft of the club do the work of getting the ball up and out.

I'm in.  I've hit balls from water a few times, and if the ball is more than half submerged, it becomes a bit sticky.  The common suggestion is if the ball is completely submerged, don't even try it.  A foot under... I'll take that bet all day long.

For the record I don't think the said feat necessarily violates any laws of the known physical universe. A distant theory is that provided enough clubhead speed the club can actually displace the water in the direction of the ball and in water forces out the ball, much like sand cushion can carry a ball out of a bunker. Club might not even need to make contact. I just don't think the amount of velocity necessary is something our good friend (or with due respect, anybody on this thread, I will venture out to say) can muster on his best day.

Good luck. I will gladly give up $10 see or even know it can be done for sure.

Let me too go on record as saying that this thread was meant to be in good fun, @MS256 , and simply played on your words. We've arranged a bet, as men often do, and it's now up to $220 versus your changing of your avatar/user title in a non-offensive way for 22 weeks. All in good fun. If you're not taking it that way, though, PM me or say so here.

Hope all is well. Again, just having some fun…

P.S. He not only would have to displace enough water to move the ball out, but the ball still has to have enough force to make it through about 17" of water in front of it. Unlike a ball on the sand, where all of the sand is UNDER the ball, the ball is riding out on a cushion of sand, not trying to power through 17" of sand.

As a side $5 bet.  I would say that in 10 tries, he makes contact with the ball only 1 time and at very slow speed barely nudging the ball off its resting place.

I might be in on that action too. Let's wait to see if @MS256 takes the challenge and then we can work up some side action. I really hope he takes the bet, I mean c'mon, there is no risk if he losses and IT'S ALL IN GOOD FUN. It'll be a blast either way.

Scenario 1 - he take's the challenge and either succeeds or doesn't. Either way, he manned up and put his money (or avatar) where is mouth is and we can all respect that.

Scenario 2 - he refuses the challenge and never lives down the claim of having, "once defeated physics." Reputation takes a hit.

C'mon MS, take a shot at it, nothin' to lose.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

So this morning I find myself actually rooting for @MS256 (all in good fun :-)) so I'm going to remove myself from the list of bet AGAINST and be the only one so far  I think, bet FOR. I hope ok since the bet is not on yet :-D . Mods can advise if not ok.

1. @Golflug

Go @ MS256!!

P.S. I have further OT explanation of my 'theory' so I am going to PM @iacas .

I declare no bet, because… it's one-sided. Even if you agreed to change your avatar/user title if he is unable to do this, none of the cash goes to you if he is. So I declare that's not a valid bet.

I'm sure @MS256 appreciates the vote of confidence, though! :D

I just tried to swing a club under 1 foot of water, and was actually surprised how little resistance I felt. Even though I can probably make decent contact with the ball, I doubt my next experiment with a ball will succeed with me doing it. I might need to invite a scratch golfer to try, even then I doubt success.

The reason why it's so hard is that unless you can maintain contact with the ball on the way out the ball will stop dead, and maintaining contact will be extremely difficult as the ball will have the tendency to slip off the club face.

Pretty difficult.

I'm telling you, those ball retrievers are the perfect 14th club for situations like this.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
