Hey guys, i'm stumped. I've officially decided to get rid of my 3 wood. I've tried at least 5 over the summer and still couldn't hit one. So what I think i'm going to do is add another long iron to my set. i'm a 9 handicap and I consider myself a solid ball striker. So i know I can handle the lower lofted irons. I carry my drives around 280-290 and the longest iron in my bag, 4 iron, around 230.  I also have a 21* hybrid that carries around 250-260. All that being said, i've tested out the sldr hybrid (22*) and averaged 265 carry with that, so it'll most likely be going in the bag next summer.  So my question to you is what loft iron should i get? i can work with that 20 yard gap between the hybrid and driver but that's a big gap between the 4 iron and hybrid.

Forget the 3W.

280+250= 530 yards. You're ready for the tour. Just hit more greens. Even Matt Kuchar hits a hybrid on those pesky 528 yard par 4s.

The answer I think you're looking for is:  Demo the clubs and get whatever loft fills the distance gaps.

But, honestly, I don't see the importance of filling those gaps at our level of play.  There are so few shots per round at those distances and we're not nearly consistent enough to squeeze something in there.  If you have a 245 yard shot, choke up on the hybrid.

Outside of that, my recommendation would be to work on the ball striking such that you can hit the fairway woods again. :)

Good luck.

Ditto. I use my longer clubs from the tee on short par 4's than anything.

OP, When you say you can't hit a 3w what exactly do you mean?

I completely agree with this. You could always try a 4 wood instead. That's what I did last year and I'm much happier with the 4. I can hit it no problem off the deck and I like it off the tee on short par 4's if I don't hit my driver.

It's either a big pull hook and I just can't get it more than 10 yards off the ground. Off the deck or tee. But that's not the only reason why I'm ditching it. With the distances I'm getting, do I really even need a 3w? That's not that big of a gap.

I have tried 4 and 5 woods as well. Easier to get off the ground but still have that awful pull hook.

One of the people I play with also carries about 300 yards. 290 on a bad day and 320 on a good day. He doesn't have a 3W and carries a 5W (I've never seen him use it even on a 7100 yard course).

I would say to stick with your hybrid as you hit it roughly 250 yards. Does it roll much past 250?

mouellette ,

Hope to see  you posting more often.

What you might do is put a What's In My Bag segment either in your sig line, or in the List function. If we know the model and mix of you clubs, and the shaft types, we can better tell what you're trying to do with your game.

As for gapping the 4i and Driver, you might try a 2H and 4H combination. A single-digit guy I play with went this way summer past with good results.

As golfingdad said, you can always choke up on a hybrid to shave off a little yardage.

And, keep trying out 4Ws at demo days. You might find one you like.

I like to play a draw so i do get a little more roll as oppose to most people who fade the ball

You don't have a PW?  10* seems an awfully big gap between a pair of short irons ... how do you reconcile that gap?

Just to be clear, you hit your 21 hybrid 260 and your 4 iron 240?

Might be worth demoing utility irons like the Callaway Apex 21 degree or the Titleist 712U 3 iron. Even though they are the same loft the performance characteristics are different. Or demo a MP 54 3 iron and see how far that goes.

+1 WUTiger... I think you should either go D, 4w, Hybrid, 4I or get a Hybrid with a little more loft, say 23-24°... In my experience Hybrids are about 1 club longer than the corresponding iron... So your hybrid is acting more or less like a 5w/2i than a 3I... so maybe get a Hybrid with closer to 4I loft and your gap between the hybrid and 4-iron Will be a little closer together. As a side note, what the hell happened to your PW?

Umm, yeah.  I'm skeptical as well--that would equate to a driver SS of around 130.  Hard to discuss gapping of distances unless we're talking about actual distances.

Not too unrealistic.

not exactly what you asked but why not add another wedge between the 9i and 52*?  With the distances you get with your driver and hybrid how often do you really find yourself at 240 yards from a green?  Precise distance gapping is much more important for approaches to a green when 10 yards too long or short could mean missing the green or ending up in a bunker. Hitting off of the tee you have a little more room to play with because you are aiming for a fairway so it is generally ok if the shot goes 250 instead of 240.

    • I went to the range and missed most of the back nine but it was an enjoyable day of golf.  I think Hovland’s +5 may have been my fault since I put some $$ on him.
    • Sorry to root against you.☺️
    • And there I was thinkin' he might be my #2 to root for
    • Finally got out to play today. Went pretty well, I was finally making good contact. I’ve been trying to feel like my tailbone moves over toward my left heel. Proper hip turn feels pretty drastic but gives much more time to square the face vs swaying on the way back. It feels like I am doing way more hip turn than I actually am. Here is a video showing that.      The only issue I was having today was some over drawing. But man this looks like a giant improvement, more in sync, more shaft lean at impact. I still look like I’m over-swinging some but I like where this is headed. I think lol.
    • I'm not sure what it is about Rory, but I always seem to root against him? Maybe because they fawn over him too much. I root for Speith to win but he just can't get over the hill, so to speak.
