getting back to the original premise of the thread. Not having the actual product in hand, I really cannot evaluate the best way to use the program until I can measure the weights suggested. Once I get a scale, I will be better able to do this.  Meanwhile, I can only relate my limited experiences with what I currently have.

With all the weights I have attached, I find that the training aid serves mostly as a tempo trainer. It is quite heavy and I can actually see the shaft flex during the swing. Not as much as the Orange Whip and similar tempo trainers, but enough where this can be of benefit. I realize that is not the purpose of the program however.

With only the smallest weights, the club is light enough to promote the speed training for which the program is designed. Again, once I get a scale, I could then assemble the club in all three configurations. Of course, I could simply design the three configurations separately.

I would concede, this is not nearly as good as the actual program. I am only trying to see if I can come up with something that comes close. I am still not convinced that it is justified in my case as it is doubtful I would achieve all that much or whether it is important to me. Heck, I will be fortunate if I can even play in  ten years or so.  Improve? maybe...Nirvana , never.

Noting the "tinkering" results above...one might surmise that one motivation is the act itself being more satisfying that the product resulting therefrom.

Yeah, be careful with the home made crap...it's that time of year " you'll shoot your eye out!!"

I just started the intro this week.  Compared to what I did last year doing triple the work, this is a piece of cake.  Taking my normal swing too...just faster.

I hit balls last night so this off season I'm mixing in hitting balls with the program.

It’s quite possible this is the weight you need?

In any case, SS did a whole study to determine the correct weights to use.

Overspeed seems to work the hips more while more weight seems to do exactly what you observed, but getting things optimized would make the program much more useful for you.

But again, please be very careful. Even a very slow swing could hurtle a roughly 200 gram chunk of steel 75mph.

I am sure you are right. I am not seeking perfection, only an approximation . I do check that the weights are secured prior to each swing. No mishaps so far. It seems to me, that the "correct" weights would vary from individual to individual, but certainly would lend credence to their study. Just for the heck of it, I stuck my "hacker whacker" slide over the heavy stick and to some extent get the best of both worlds with audible feedback. You may recall my saying awhile back, that my first efforts with the "hacker whacker" sent the golf ball assembly into orbit.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hit a new PR last night with my green club on the step through swing. It is only a 1 MPH increase over my previous best, but a PR is a PR. I did realize too that the shaft from my green club was taken from an old 3 wood I have, so it is over an inch shorter than my blue and red clubs, which probably explains why sometimes my blue club numbers are much closer to my green club than I expected.

In some ways that makes me feel better, because in theory with a proper driver length shaft, I might even be a few more MPH higher with the green club than what I am seeing right now.

At this point I'm starting to think it might be worth it for me to spend an hour and $40 on a local trackman and see what my driver numbers are and if a lower launching/lower spin shaft/head combo might be in order since I still have a high launch shaft and a 12 degree head from when I was swinging much slower and hitting down on the ball.

Not to diminish your gains - but your SSR in the pic is set for a baseball bat swing not the golf swing (middle button L-R sets this) . I have noticed that my swing speeds are off when in this setting. YMMV. But yeah sounds like you are ready for a club fitting session at the very least.

 I've had the radar for a little over 2 months now and had no idea there were two separate modes. Guess I probably should read the instructions.

But that definitely could explain some of the inconsistencies I had been seeing and the unit not picking up some of my swings in the last few sessions.

Looking back at my previous PR of 132, at least that time it was in golf mode. Thanks for the heads up!

I hadn't even thought of that. That'd be a fun trip, I'll have to see if we can get something scheduled.

Using my SSR, I guess I have not found the sweet spot placement as hitting with a ball is slower than without. I have read it is supposed to be the opposite. It might be that with a ball (and hitting into a net), that I am a little apprehensive and sub-consciously holding back a little. No matter, I am only looking for gradual improvement. No problem in picking up swings with 100% feedback.

In doing the training, do any of you worry that your swing form will change? I did this a couple of years ago and I found I was changing my normal swing. So I backed off.

I have filmed my swing a couple times using the SuperSpeed sticks, and honestly I wish my swing with my regular clubs looked like my SuperSpeed swing does. On my SuperSpeed swings, my head is much more steady, my body is more open at impact, my left arm is straight at impact, no wrist flip, all things I am working to improve on in my regular swing.

Although I will say one reason I think it might be better with the SuperSpeed swings is because there's no clubhead or face to square at "impact" so perhaps my body doesnt feel the need to adjust and flip at the ball to square the clubface? Just a thought.

That's interesting. I had one  last year that shattered when my driver clubhead took an unintended detour. Anyway, don't remember the separate  settings.  Must be on the newer ones. Wonder how the algorithms differ. From what I know about dopplers, it shouldn't matter.

Anyway, the delta in gains is what matters as long as it is the same setting each time right?

I don't. I'm just trying to train my muscles to go fast. Not to hit a golf ball. So I don't worry about my form or try to make my "normal golf swing just faster." I just do what I can for speed, within the rules (i.e. I don't take a running start, etc.).

The signal processing could be different. Maybe with a golf club it takes the highest speed, but with a bat it takes a few inches in from the end more on the middle of the barrel instead of the end of the barrel (where you don't want to hit the ball)?

Erik, I saw your post on instagram last night, is there a specific reason you don't do the training year round? Is it just a time thing with everything else you have going on, or is there a different reason? Do you notice that the speed you gain from the program disappears throughout the season once you stop using them?

I ask because I saw in the caption you mentioned that you are starting up your "yearly SuperSpeed training again"

Pretty much. Summers are busier, and I was injured twice last year so training would have been pointless (ankle, groin) and perhaps counter-productive.

Last year I wouldn't say I "noticed" anything because I was injured most of it. I was playing, but not at even 90% most of the year.

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
    • Generally speaking, extended warranties are a terrible deal and should almost always be avoided. They are a huge profit center for the companies that offer them, which should tell you almost everything you need to know about how much value most consumers get when purchasing them.  This is correct, and the old adage applies - only buy insurance when you can't afford the loss. This usually doesn't apply to most consumer goods.  To your second question, no I don't believe the offer is fair. They are replacing it, but it is not being replaced at "no cost to you". Since the amount being disputed (over $500) is non-trivial, I would probably push the issue. Don't waste your time on the phone with a customer service agent or a supervisor. They have probably given you all they have the authority to do. Rather, I would look at the terms of your agreement and specifically legal disputes. The odds are you probably agreed to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute. The agreement will outline what steps need to be followed, but it will probably look something like this.  1. Mail the Nordic Track legal department outlining your dispute and indicate you are not satisfied with the resolution offered.  2. Open up a case with the AAA (American Arbitration Association), along with the required documentation. 3. Wait about 4-5 weeks for a case to be opened - at which point someone from Nordic Track's legal department will offer to give you the new model at no cost to you.  They certainly don't want to spend the time and energy to fight you over $500. 4. Enjoy your new Nordic Track at no cost to you. I recently entered binding arbitration against a fairly large and well known company that screwed me over and refused to make it right. In my demand letter, I made a pretty sizeable request that included compensation for my time and frustration. Once it hit their legal department, they cut me a check - no questions asked. It was far cheaper to settle with me than to send their legal team to defend them in the arbitration.
    • I never thought of looking at it on multiple purchases like you said.  Yes, the extended may help me on 1 or 2 items but not the other 5 or 6.
    • Day 84 - Forgot to post yesterday, but I did some more chipping/pitching.    Back/neck were feeling better today, so I did a much overdue Stack session.
