I noticed that I'm not getting my shoulders turned around to 90° during my back swing. I let my grip pull my arms, shoulders, torso, and hips back into their coiled positions and can feel the built up kinetic energy ready to uncoil. But I can only achieve about 80° on the back turn. The other thing I don't like with my technique is that it's difficult for me to set my wrists back because there's a little bit of tension in my grip as it is the driving force when twisting everything else tight.

Now, I can easily achieve the 90° back turn if I allow my hips and shoulders to help out, but then I'll loose some of the built up torsional energy in my hips that I'll need to start a powerful downswing.

Can someone tell me the errors in my method?

Thank you,

Mark

I had the same problem. I had a lesson and was told as long as you get your left shoulder(right handed) behind the ball on your turn you are in good shape. I have been doing stretches to increase my flexibility. and my old body is starting to loosen up.

Left shoulder behind the ball....sounds good. I'm going to try that.

I'll make you a deal. How about I give you the last 1/3 of my rotation

In My Bag ( Superlight 3.5):

Driver: 9.5* Burner SuperFast, Matrix Ozik XCon 4.8 Stiff
Fairway Woods: Steelhead III, Uniflex Steel (3w, 5w)
Hybrids: Big Bertha Heavenwood 4H, Uniflex SteelIrons: Victory Red Full Cavity, Stiff (5-AW)Wedges: WALTER HAGEN,...

To turn more you could try:

- stretching
- lifting your chin slightly to give more room for your shoulder to turn under
- closing your stance slightly to give your body more room to turn (Hogan style)
- increasing your tilt (away from the target) which will also round out your swing a little bit more and give you more room to turn

With regards to your wrists, I'm guessing that:
- you could be too stiff at address in the first place which means that you can't really set it at the top
- your grip is flawed (especially in the left hand) which doesn't allow the wrist to hinge properly at the top of your backswing

If I remember other possibilities then I'll post later on...

Lol, but a fifth is all I need

Don't you wish we take the easy road and trade off our woes? But then Golf wouldn't be as challenging and fun. Supercow, Thanks for all of your great ideas. I'm going to start a light lifting and stretching program at the YMCA this fall. As far as closing my stance, could that affect my slight draw that I now get and convert my shots to fades? Also, I'm a little hesitant to tilt back more than I'm doing now because I don't want to shallow my swing too much. I'm trying to hit down on the ball and If I can set my wrists better on the top and maintain lag longer, I should be able to accomplish a better downswing strike. Supercow -> - you could be too stiff at address in the first place which means that you can't really set it at the top That's exactly what my golf instructor said. Supercow -> - your grip is flawed (especially in the left hand) which doesn't allow the wrist to hinge properly at the top of your backswing Very true. My wrist feel awkward and restricted during my attempt to set on top. I purchased David Leadbetter's Swingsetter to help me with this. SC, Thanks again for the advice. By the way, I like your new avatar. Regards, Mark

Actually, closing your stance will actually encourage a draw if you take the club away on the proper path (since you're attacking it from further inside).

I'm still trying to work out whether I actually like this avatar. Kind of scares me a little... LOL I'm still seriously thinking about trying one of these: http://supertomate.typepad.fr/blog/W...s_3%5B2%5D.jpg http://supertomate.typepad.fr/blog/W...s_4%5B2%5D.jpg
