Would You Leave Earth to Colonize Mars?

I was more referring to the negativity in their reasoning; seemed like many wouldn't go regardless of family situation. Just an observation.

Right, that was sorta my point. It's a hypothetical so as I mentioned, I made the assumption that it was viable, although it probably won't be for 100 yrs or so.

Well I started the thread on the Mars One project, so it's based on their timeline. They plan to colonize Mars by 2025.

Yeah, that's just crazy. We'll get no new data from it, and people from the year 2125 will think of it like the Donner party from the late 1800s near lake Tahoe only dumber. We should probably focus on keeping our own planet habitable given all the climate changes we expect.

I voted yes, I have very little at this point that would keep me here. That's always subject to change though.

It has nothing to do with not having any sense of adventure I'd just rather we focus our energies on this planet rather than go off into space to screw up another one.

I voted 'No' because the whole Mars One thing seems like a crackpot scheme to me.  Firstly, if you're seriously planning to colonize and terraform a planet, you wouldn't be seeking random volunteers from the populace at large - you'd be selectively recruiting the best and brightest scientists, engineers, doctors, etc. that would be willing to undertake such a mission.  Secondly, the logistics of supporting a crew of 100 for an 8-month space flight and an indeterminate time on a planet with no infrastructure or vital elements in place (water, agriculture, natural resources) are so enormous that the whole project is a farce right from the start.  Boiled down to it's simplest definition, it's sending a bunch of idealistic yahoos on a guaranteed death mission.

I would venture even farther than that if the suit didn't restrict your swing. Low gravity and less atmospheric friction would really help!

I do it.  To be able to go down in history as the first human to set foot on another planet would be special.  Sure, it would be a one-way ticket and a certain death sentence but Id take a short life of signifigance over 100 years of nothing.
