How were the greens?  I was there two years ago and the grass wasn't very dense at all on the greens.  Maybe that's just the way fescue grass is?  I didn't like them at all.

My ball landed on the green, above the 9th pin.  I had to putt downhill to the pin that day.  There was no way to stop the ball (other than making the putt)  My ball rolled past the hole and into that front bunker.  The only way to keep it on the green from the back is to putt it sideways 30 ft AWAY from the hole.  9 will be fun to watch.

How did you shoot?

Greens were just phenominal......very true and fast, but like you said, with those green complexes it can be too much in places.  I am a solid 6 handicap and shot an 83....and felt "pretty good" about it.....I misssed only four fairways and there were a couple lies in the rough that were just brutal.....like 60-80 advances brutal.

I also had the putter in my hands 8 times and failed to get up and down......now, those are not all technically three-putts because I was off the green a bit on some, but if I was a little bit more tidy with my speed, I could have been much better (had a three-putt par on 12).....for someone who doesn't get to play/practice nearly enough, my short game is always the shaky part.......need more work

But damn...........it was an absolute treat to see that course in near US Open shape.......

Not surprising, no social live streaming vids announcement. Pretty hard to enforce though I would think. Most video shooting apps look the same if you look at the screen, how can you figure the identity of someone who just posted a video if account is anonymous. I think there might be more controversy to come.

Quote:

U.S. Open fairways will be out of bounds for live video streaming at next month’s tournament in Washington.

While golf fans will be allowed to bring their phones on the course for the first time at golf’s second-oldest tournament, apps such as Periscope and Meerkat will be prohibited.

“Violation of the above policy may result in immediate expulsion and loss of ticket privileges for the remainder of the championship,” guidelines from the U.S. Golf Association say for the tournament at Chambers Bay golf course in University Place, Washington.

I will be there on the Wednesday to watch the practice rounds.  I will be yelling at Poulter... telling him outfits are a farce.

I hope you're joking.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Dear Dustin Johnson, Please take time to note what is a sand trap and what isn't. Signed, USGA

Dear @Rick Martin , As the USGA, we would not ever write "sand trap" to refer to what is known properly as a "bunker." Please consult the nearest copy of The Rules of Golf for more on this. Signed, USGA

Given Fox's coverage of the U.S. Women's Four-Ball, I'm really not looking forward to this U.S. Open anymore. :-(

Given Fox's coverage of the U.S. Women's Four-Ball, I'm really not looking forward to this U.S. Open anymore.

I watched some of it last night ... and yikes.  I'm going to try and remain optimistic about it though.  When they showed the Mid-Am a couple of weeks ago, it was with their "A" crew at the helm.  Joe Buck and Greg Norman were there.  I didn't really watch any of it so I don't know how the coverage looked.

This event was clearly not their A team.  So I'm hoping that means that it wasn't their A team all the way through.  Or should I say "praying."  (Of course, if they only have a couple of USGA tournaments a year, then there is no reason to even have a B team so ... oh no.)

I only got through a couple of holes because of how slow they were playing.  (When it started, they were all near the edge of a green, and eight minutes later, the hole finally ended.  Seriously, I rewound it to double check because I got distracted for a minute and looked back and assumed that they were on the next green already.  Nope.)  So after I turned it off, maybe they got a little more streamlined?

Beautiful course though!  Can't wait to play it now.

A super silly minor stupid quibble, but I can't stand those first 6 notes of the Fox Sports "theme" from football or baseball in the opening golf theme music. I understand the branding and marketing reasons, it just doesn't sound like golf, like NBC's theme did.

yeah, some of the courses i play are ridiculous for the slopes of the tee boxes.  some are either concave or convex.

Like where?

We'll be seeing a lot of Holly with Fox covering the US Open, right?

IMO, she really hasn't helped herself with the "work" that's she's had done recently.

One unique thing about Washington is it stays light there in June until around 10pm and the sun's up at 5. So golf will be going on all the way up until midnight on the East Coast. I expect the USGA to take advantage of the extra daylight. You'll be seeing the last groups teeing off prolly around 7:30 or so on Saturday and Sunday, which is very odd. Truly will be primetime golf.

Really?  I had never heard that before.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?
    • Day 539, April 23, 2024 Mirror work once again. When I get back to swings, I'll just do it A. LOT.
    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
