Wait. Is that driver total or carry?  How can a scratch hit it only 250 on 7000 yard courses?

7000/18 = 389 yards average.

389-250 = 139.

That's, what, a 9I? Or an 8I for the shorter hitters?

P.S. 589-yard par-fives and 189-yard par threes are all perfectly reachable too.

My 8i is my go to 115 yard club.  God, I really do suck! :-O

Putting aside the use of other clubs (irons off the tee on a short par-4), driving distance is an average, which can be fairly sensitive to outliers.  For example, if you hit (9) drives that go 275 yards, and one drive that duck-hooks 100 yards into the weeds, your average will be less than 258 yards.

You wouldn't want to use 258 as your driver distance for game-planning purposes...but at the same time, it may be a good measure of just how badly that 100-yard drive affects your scoring.

I'm curious: does GG give you the option to look at your median drive instead?  For you folks who know more about using golf stats to instruct your game, do you think a "median" number would be more useful for distance stats?

GG  gives you a "typical" yardage which I would guess is similar or close to the median. My average including all outiers is 263, but my "typical" is 279 according to game golf. It's a bit off because the typical includes the long drive outliers but eliminates the most severe of the short drives.

Gotcha.  So when planning your shot zones, you can use the 279 number, but when comparing to the "similar" player you want to also know the severity of those mishits.  Makes a lot of sense.

I used the app this Sunday to see if I'd like it.   Using just my Android phone was a pain but I can see the benefits.    I would not use my phone again without buying the hardware.     I usually shoot around 94-96.   First time playing this course.    I can see where getting off of the tee was my biggest problem.    What I didn't like about the app was when I hit what I call a knock down shot (partial shot), it still recorded the club and then used that distance to calculate the mean.

    • Day 70, August 3, 2021: Grip work, I mean my grip sucks. So I worked on it for ten minutes then hit some chips.
    • Depends on where they’re playing. Most courses around me are fairly wide open. I’ll take Hillandale as an example. Not long at all for the pros, just over 6400 as a par 71.  The four par 3s are mid length holes (one about 165, one about 180 and two that are 190). One of them has an all carry approach and one has a tough green. The longest par 4 out there is only about 430 from the blues, which is driver-wedge for most pros, and a lot of them are fairly straightaway. Most are in the range of 370-400 from the blues. All three par 5s are reachable in two, the longest clocking in at 510 and the shortest a mere 440.  I know this is just one course, but I’ll say a pro can shoot mid 60s pretty easily.
    • The conditions, particularly of the putting greens, don't appear to be "bad" at all there. That stuff matters.

    • Day 584 - August 3, 2021 Hit fifteen or twenty balls at Chautauqua between lessons. Wrists while I turn, 1/2 swing (or 3/4). Whatever it is, it's "less." Hit some good ones.
