  1. 1. Would you be comfortable playing golf with a stranger who you knew was carrying a loaded revolver in their bag?

    • Yes. I am perfectly comfortable with that

    • No. I would ask to be placed in a different group.

    • Maybe. I would take my first impression of them and use that as a guide.

Given the wording of the poll, I'd vote maybe too if the stranger made it obvious was carrying a switch blade or machete.  Does our hesitancy speak to the presence of the revolver or the fact that the stranger felt the need to arm him/her self to play golf?

It's the weapon for me not the type.  If he had a military style knife I would feel the same with my first impression.  The line I put in bold is well written and explains my feelings.

Look - if someone gets a bit twitchy just because, after a good drive, I like to shoot the tee out of the ground like any normal person......

then that's their problem

While that's probably true for some people, many of us live in places where concealed carry is pretty much illegal.  So for some of us, like me, we can be virtually certain that nobody that we interact with on a daily basis carries a concealed weapon.

No, what you can be virtually certain of is that if someone IS carrying they are more likely to be a criminal who might kill you, not a responsible law abiding person who just might rescue you and save your life.

Seems like it is the gun itself that makes people uncomfortable. Would anyone hesitate to get into a car with someone that had a six pack in the car ? Would the presence of the alcohol  make you uncomfortable ? They are not drinking it, you don't know if they are going to drink it, its just there.

Really?  You equate a six pack in a car with carrying a gun?  I'm on the pro gun side and even I can see what a silly argument that is.  The gun can be used immediately without warning.  For the six pack to create an analogous situation the driver would have to drink the beer.  And even in the most avid chugging contests in my college days, no one I know was ever able to chug a 6-pack as fast as the most fumble fingered person can bring their gun into play.

My only question is why bring a weapon with you if the situation outlined is safe?  You already have 15 sanctioned weapons in your bag.  Why one more additional weapon?

Because lots of people have been killed in "safe" places?

I cant even really live in a country where people carry weapons.

Cant beleive how many dead there are in the US by firearm. probably beats drugs and alcoohol.

On your first point: good - it is already too crowded here.

On your second point: you are completely wrong.

But then again we do not have hundreds dying in summer because it got hot.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

That seems contradictory. Is it the weapon, or the type of weapon that concerns you? You're worried about someone who has a " military style" knife, but not some other type of knife, maybe a kitchen or hunting knife approximately the same size?

I think some people are scared of guns.

My wife did not grow up with guns around the house. She does not like them and it has taken her quite awhile to get used to seeing a (unloaded of course) gun on the table or corner of living room when I come home from hunting.

I agree, I think some people are just uncomfortable in the presence of a gun.

I dated a woman once who was apparently afraid of the physical object itself. Went to a friends home for dinner and after dinner he wanted to show me his new P220 so he brought it out, mag well empty, locked open, and placed it on the table. At which point she said "We should be careful or we could be injured or killed". I asked "You mean by the gun lying on the table?" and she responded "yes". Oddly as long as the gun was in his hand she was fine but when it was placed on the table is when she became uncomfortable. As if she felt similar to the situation where a driver falls asleep at the wheel and the car now has the potential of doing serious harm since no one is at the controls anymore.

I voted no. I dont understand why someone would have a gun on them at the golf course, and that makes me very uncomfortable. Having a gun on you makes you more dangerous, and everyone else less safe.

When he says "military style," I take that to mean as opposed to a simple utility or pocket knife, like a Leatherman or Swiss Army knife.

If it was me, and a guy was "armed" on the golf course with a chefs knife, I'm pretty sure that would be considerably more alarming than any military knife, or even gun, LOL.

Someone having a knife, mallet putter or a black belt in a martial art makes them more dangerous too.

First of all, equating someone having a black belt in karate to carrying a gun on the golf course is pretty absurd. Secondly, I'd also be more than a little put off if someone was carrying a hammer or knife; it's just that we're talking about someone carrying a gun and not those items.

And, are you implying that blade putters ... blade putters are not also dangerous??  It's right in the name, for crying out loud. :-P (Think the end of Single White Female if you've ever seen that movie) If you haven't, then all I have to say is stiletto heel and eyeballs don't blend well together. ;)

I seriously disagree with the bolded.... Just because a person has a gun doesn't make everyone else less safe. In a lot of situations it would actually make everyone else more safe. There is only a handful of situations that a person having a gun makes others unsafe.

I'll grant you, the entire purpose behind having a gun, is to make myself more "dangerous". I'm not young anymore, a bit overweight, and pretty arthritic. I need all the help I can get should something unforeseen happen. But, why would me , having a gun, make you less safe?

Exactly, for the beer to be dangerous the person would have to drink it. For the gun to be dangerous the person would have to use it. Neither is dangerous if it just sits there. Hope that makes my point more understandable. I don't care if it takes longer to drink the beer, the person might have to stop and buy bullets for the gun. No one ever said the gun was loaded ?

I don't want to be riding in the car with anyone drinking ANY amount.

I think there are a few others who didn't catch the "loaded" part and voted yes or maybe.   I've ran into enough crazy people over the years and just can't trust a perfect stranger with loaded gun in golf course or anywhere else for that matter.   Think about this.  By all medical journals and studies, anywhere between 1% - 5% world population have some type of personality disorder.    I am assuming that includes people who take loaded guns to golf courses.   I have but one life and why take a chance when it can be easily avoided?

A true story from my high school days.   We were playing basketball after school.   One little guy was acting really macho pushing around much bigger guys, and nobody was setting him straight.  He was getting away with a lot of BS which normally was an offense that gets repaid with healthy dose of beating (or at least big hip checks).   It turns out, later I found out that he had gun in his backpack that gave him a sense of invincibility.

It's not really feasible to carry an unloaded revolver, they take too long to load.  Don't you remember those old Andy Griffith shoes where "Barney" couldn't ever get his gun loaded in time to stop the crime?
