Slice now a hook! Hi guys, started playing semi seriously a few weeks ago after being a twice annual player for the last few years. Started doing a bit of reading on how to play the game and very quickly realised I wasn't even holding the club or standing in remotely the right position! Anyway, initially, like many others, I had a wicked slice which got worse the longer the club I had in my hand although I put that down to completely altering my grip and just get used to changing my stance. Fast forward a few weeks and quite a few rounds, I now seem to have developed a wicked hook. Again, it gets much worse the longer the club in my hand. From 7 iron down I am absolutely fine but with 4 iron and driver it's a nightmare. Any ideas on why my slice/hook gets worse with longe clubs and how I have graduated from a slice to a hook? I know for sure my grip should be more neutral, I have my right hand almost on the back of the club. I will hooefully post a video very soon

Where is the ball starting before it hooks?

It starts left then curves left or it starts left and stays straight?

Sounds like he's saying he hits a straight pull. Starts left and goes straight (in a left direction).

easy - take whatever you changed, and do half of that. :-P

I'm happy to help...

To update, it's a really nasty hook I'm getting only really when I tee the ball up. Long irons and hybrid are the main culprit. Maybe tee the ball lower? Standing little too close to the ball? I can head one dead straight one hole and violently left the next hole, like waaaaaaay left a total goner not even going looking for it

To add, it comes off left and then swings left. Rarely happens when hitting the same clubs from the fairway or rough Also think I may be standing too close the ball and making a really steep swing meaning I need a perfect or lucky contact

If you are hitting a pull hook, you are swinging across the ball, from outside-in and you have the club face very closed. The club face is facing further left than your swing path. Is your grip strong?

Generally speaking, we don't know that to be true (though in this specific case it's 99% likely since he previously sliced the ball).

Right. The only fact we really know is that his club face is pointed left and his swing path is right of that. His path could be just about anywhere. But as you pointed out, considering it was a slice and now is a pull hook, he's most likely swinging out to in with a very shut club face.

I had a real issue with hitting off the tee vs the ground also for a long time (sometimes it rears its ugly head).  I was setting up very differently and didn't even know it (checking the stance vs a fairway shot, etc is something to look at)  - best to get someone to take stealth pics of you during a roud.  I also noted poor pressure transfer too.  It's so mental.

I agree 100%. A lot of times, I over-analyze when in the tee box. Tee height, stance, ball placement--the list goes on.

Some things I've tried that have helped:

- loosen your grip - allow that face to come through square

- make sure your tempo is controlled

- tee it low and let it go

- when all else fails, quit thinking about it, GRIP IT AND RIP IT

Went to the range tonight and hit my Adams v4 hybrid (4 iron). Out of 50 balls maybe 1 or 2 snap hooks, decent amount straight and starting hooking it a bit later on. Started straight and drifted left Was trying to open up the club face and start my hands in front of the ball Think my problem might be over rotating the shoulders and causing my to swing through and past the ball rather than squaring up shoulders and going through the ball straight Any feedback apprieicated Should add I felt much more at ease hitting it off the mat, was getting too much height from the tee. Felt good connection hitting from the mat and even mis hits were going 125-150

And to add, i did used to have a strong grip but now it is more neutral. Seems like it might be my right hand getting over the club on downswing that might be putting me left? When I feel if at the back and supporting the club on the downswing the and pushing through the ball that's when I feel the best strike Or is that total rubbish?

I think it's time you started a swing thread. Going to much easier to help you that way than to guess what is happening.

My slice is starting to driving me crazy, if I give up golf, it will be just because of my slice with the driver!!

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.
    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
