Re-dropping- Why 2 club lengths?

Why would it be two strokes penalty?  Your original tee shot (which was found and in play) is one. The penalty stroke for the unplayable is 2 and the re-tee (re-hit from the previous position as the option chosen under the unplayable) is your 3rd shot.  What am I missing or what did you not say, for example did you pick up the ball and then realized you couldn't use it?

I did not pick up the ball.   The official relayed to me that if I want to re-tee, I do so with 2 stroke penalty.  That is what I want to know, too.   Why 2 strokes?

He is wrong if that is indeed what he meant.  Sometimes the stroke and distance penalty is interpreted that way, because it is essentially a two stroke addition to ones score.  It's one penalty stroke, plus you lose the distance back to where you made the previous stroke.

He said 2 stroke penalty, not a penalty and distance.   He has to call the golf shop to relay the rule so something could have been lost during the relay.   I lost that hole b/c I gave up the hole after seeing my opponent make bogey.  Had I re-tee'd, I still had a chance to tie the hole.   Oh, well.

Yep, a provisional is only used if the original is lost or OB.  Once the original is found, other than OB, the provisional is dead.  This prevents you from choosing the option of chossing to use the provisional rather than one of the other unplayable options already knowing where the provisional is.

I did some misreading!  I seeing that Rick wanted to use his provisional after finding the original unplayable, which you can't do.  But after finding the original, it's like the provisional never happened.  So the new shot from the tee should be the third.  I don't see how anyone would apply a two stroke penalty for an unplayable, I hope there was a misunderstanding somewhere!
