Thanks to @Rob Thompson and @iacas for setting up this outing. It was a blast again. It was fun to see everyone and especially some new faces.

Photos from today (just the three on the first tee):

@dave s , @Braivo , @Jeremie Boop , and @vasaribm .

@mcanadiens , @saevel25 , @georgep , and @Slice of Life .

@Rob Thompson , @iacas , @Hardspoon , and @macdaddy18 .

The winning team… is in the last picture, and Rob and I were ineligible. :)

Bogey is 1, Par is 2, and Birdie is 3… and two people playing 18 holes can get 4 if they play to their handicaps, or 72 points total. 58/0.8 (we played 80% handicaps) = 72.5.

Great job!

That's the kind of focus that gets you last place and second to last place. Also, that starter was pretty strict and we were a minute behind our tee time.

I don't know what it is about playing with Erik that brings the absolute worst out in my golf "game", but I always have a great time regardless.

Always a pleasure gents, thanks for hosting and setting it up Rob and Erik.

First of all, thanks to @iacas and @Rob Thompson for organizing/hosting - had a great time, on a fantastic course.  It was awesome to get to play the round with them and @macdaddy18 .

Didn't really get to take advantage of much "course knowledge", of course, when their play would be "See that tree 220 yards away?  If you can just hit it over that, you're in great shape." ;-) Definitely fun to watch three golfers that good play their game, though.

Since part of my "prize" was to tally the scores, here they are:

@macdaddy18 and @Hardspoon -  58 points

@saevel25 and @mcanadiens -  48 points

@georgep and @Slice of Life -  47 points

@vasaribm and @Jeremie Boop -  39 points

@dave s and @Braivo -  43 points

Here's a quick chart of each hole and the total number of points scored (by all players combined):

I think we all would have guessed that #1 yielded the most points, but I was surprised to see #17 up there (although it was the 2nd handicap hole).

Let's hear some details - how'd yall play, good shots, bad shots, fun holes, pictures, prizes, etc. :)

THE SHORT VERSION:

I discovered that you'll do pretty well in a handicap format (even 80%) when you put up your second-best differential EVER.  I won a great Titleist backpack - and the first two alignment sticks I've ever owned - for being on the winning team, and my choice of golf polo (Adidas Clima-Cool) from the Pro Shop for winning the MVP.  The backpack is going to perfect for an upcoming European excursion.

THE LONG VERSION:

Playing in tournaments is fun. This was a first for me (I signed up to get an official handicap just for this).  Loved playing alongside a teammate, knowing that the score on each hole matters for something a little extra.

Golf is hard. This was the hardest course I've played, since we played the tips (71.8/127).  Mentally, I think it actually helped me...really makes you focus on the fact that you MUST advance the ball as far as you can (safely, of course) with each stroke.  Shot a 99 (gross), and was pretty happy.

Golf is funny. My worst and one of my best shots (in terms of strokes gained) came within a minute of each other.  I "hit" a "drive" that went - literally - 3 INCHES.  As close as you can come to whiffing without actually whiffing - it sounded like a putt.  Walked off the tee, and watched everyone else hit with my stupid ball just sitting there next to my tee, laughing at me.  Shook it off, grabbed a 4-wood, and striped a 225-yarder right down the middle.

My best shot: Had a greenside bunker shot that I put within a couple feet to save par...can't argue with that.

My worst shot: See "I hit a 3-inch drive" above.  Kind of wish I had Game Golf just to see that.

Best hole: Knew I needed a par (5) on the 18th to break 100, and it took three solid shots and a two-putt from the fringe to do it.

Worst hole: Well, I only lost two balls all day, and they were in the same hazard on consecutive shots...so, that one.

Single-club is fun. This was a great time...played with @saevel25 and @Slice of Life - we went with a 6-iron.  On the first hole, Matt casually hit two 6-irons, and the second one rolled through the green. On a 470-yard par 5. It may have rolled through the green while the group in front of us was ON the green...but whatever.

The course is fantastic. Anyone who lives near or around Norwalk - you have to check this course out.  It's in fantastic condition, and just an all-around great layout.  I'm hoping to get to play it again sometime from a set of tees that's a little more in my comfort zone.

Overall, just a great time.  Good to get to meet a great group of guys, and definitely looking forward to the next one!

Big thanks to @Rob Thompson and @iacas for putting a very nice event together. Rob should be very proud of Eagle Creek which was a great host venue, and Erik should be proud of having played the greatest round in the history of golf w/ a purple ball! I also want to thank Erik for helping me realize I can still make a 3 foot putt as long as I keep my eyes closed (sad, but true). Congratulations to my partner, @Hardspoon , on his MVP winning performance. He played right to his hdcp. today, but that will be coming down soon as his game has a lot of upside potential w/ a little more experience. The Titleist backpacks were a very nice surprise to wrap up the day! For anyone on the fence about participating in this event, it is well worth your time and very reasonable investment. Hope to see everyone again next year.

Norwallk, Ohio has a very luxurious Wendy's.

The Best Western has a room with four King size beds.

The clubhouse had a great deal on buckets of craft beer - $12

@iacas puts on a great event and takes care of his forum members.

@Rob Thompson was an excellent host and Eagle Creek is a fantastic facility. The course is beautiful, interesting, challenging, and forgiving at the same time.

I had a thoroughly enjoyable 24 hour stay in Norwalk. Spent some time at the range Friday afternoon. Erik took some high speed video for us to use on our member swing threads.

Friday evening we played the one-club scramble, really enjoyed this event. We chose to use a 7i and come in at +3 for nine.

This was ultimately my downfall on Saturday though, as I took more swings on Friday than I should have. I couldn't overcome the soreness and fatigue on Saturday and battled through my round. I shot well above my handicap as my partner @dave s carried the load. We enjoyed playing with @vasaribm and @Jeremie Boop who were also my partners for the one club scramble.

My only real memorable shot on Saturday was on 15 I believe (I forgot to bring a scorecard home with me). It was a par 3 playing about 178 with the wind to a pin tucked behind a bunker. I hit a 5i to about 12 feet and lipped the putt for a par and two much needed points. The next best hole I played all day was #9 in wind and rain.

Looking forward to next year.

I always have a good time at the outings, I just wish I could play some good golf at the same time. I concur with everyone else's assessment of how great the course was. Definitely nice and challenging without being unforgiving. It was also cool to be able to try out the new M1 stuff. Thanks to @iacas and @Rob Thompson for putting this on as I was seriously bummed thinking we wouldn't have one this year. Looking forward to next year. Was nice to meet @Braivo , @dave s , and thin Matt aka @Hardspoon , I believe I had met everyone else that was there before but always great to see people from the forum again.

Couple of interesting things, @Braivo plays 845s and was still right up there in distance most of the time with @vasaribm and me in the 1 club scramble. I did find a way to hit a house... again. I also think I found a way to hit more trees than anyone else. On the 17th hole I checked out mentally when one of my better drives of the day ended up here:

Not sure if it's very clear but the ball was in a supremely bad spot. I should have had someone film my attempt to play the shot... It was pretty comical but at the same time my cumulative bad play for the day got to me and I wasn't able to make a good shot for the rest of that hole or the next.

I hope to see everyone again next year and even more people.

I enjoyed it. That was a good format for me since it mitigated the damage done by my blow up holes. If memory serves that would be 10 and 18. It was nice to be able to score some points for the cause. Good meeting everyone. If we do it next year, I'll definitely have to get that Friday off.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
