Yeah, but MJ would try to eat the players if things went poorly.

Agree. MJ is part of my line up. My team of captains for winning: Chris Demarco MJ Nick Saban Steve Stricker Players? Gotta get the young flat bellies with fire who are playing hot the year prior to Ryder Cup and.. Dump Keegan, Simpson. I also wish US Team would include Central America and Australia. Who are we to think we can take on Europe? When the RC was started is whole different ball game now.

At this point if the team continues to lose they need to add a spark.

Daly would bring that.

Yep. Let's put the 828th ranked player in the world in there as a "playing captain". Great idea.

You're right. The 590th ranked with a previous loss is a much better choice....

Did I say that? No. Are you suggesting that if you don't like Daly you agree with then current option? At least be logical about it. And don't put words in my mouth.

I would choose almost anyone  above a chain smoking, alcoholic douchebag who can barely bring himself to remain on a golf course after his first three putt despite being given a(nother) sponsor's exemption. Or one who deliberately hits half a dozen balls in the water so he can claim to have run out of balls. Or someone who smashes a spectator's camera to pieces.

Imagine all the players swearing to do their best for "caprtain Daly" as if he is someone with an ounce of credibility.

Daly was an awesome player and his PGA victory was one of the most exciting things ever in professional golf. Let's not pretend he has some special quality that make him a leader. He gives up on his own game, so imagine him rallying the troops. Yeah, right.

John Daly has absolutely none of the credentials to qualify as a Ryder Cup Captain, let alone  a "playing Captain". This thread makes as much sense as the one where people think a "non politician" woiuld make a good President. Have a look at the history of non politicians getting high office and see where it leads. And that doesn't mean I think politicians are good. I don't.

Wait till Trump sends yoiur country bankrupt or to another pointless war and have him say. "Hey - I never said I was a politician, but I know what works." Inheriting billions is what works.

Daly is a whiner, a blamer, a quitter and anything but a leader. But he was a great player 20 years ago.

Nice soliloquy, but I didn't put any words in your mouth. I'm just stating neither choice works for me. Daly is a mess I agree. I also don't like the silver spooned Davis III ( having a numeral in your name is douchey enough.) Our choices are not working assuming the captain has anything to do with winning. Daly is no leader that's for sure although I don't contribute his lack of leadership to his smoking or drinking habits. A playing captain should of course be a PGA tour golfer, but a non playing captain could be anyone with a good personality, motivating, respected and hell just give a damn. Tradition and "good ole boy" picks need to go. Get the young guys with fire in their eyes. Dump Keegan and Simpson. Get DJ back, Phil as a playing captain.

Daly's first captain's pick would be Anthony Kim so he would have someone to drink with. Daly seems like a decent guy, but I can't think of anyone in any sport, with the exception of Len Bias, that wasted more talent.

I'm not quite sure I'm comfortable with describing someone who died of a tragic overdose as 'wasted talent'.

The Ryders Cup Captain does sort of "represent" the US . .so we need to make sure we don't pick a clown.  What about Michael Jordan?

Michael Jordan has about as much credibility as a human being as Daly does. He was a great, great basketball player. Full stop.

Oh Shorty you're just being a big grump now. The RC isn't the Yalta Conference for Pete's sake. It's a frigging golf tournament. Who do you approve...Mr. Rogers? MJ was the worlds largest known athlete at one time and knows about motivation and winning. Besides, some crabby old man sitting in an Archie Bunker chair whining about people and offering no ideas gets us nowhere. Chris DeMarco? Or is his hair to close to his collar for you?

Michael Jordan was suspended for gambling and played baseball for two years to cover it up!

Not just a great, great player. THE greatest. But what he did off the court is in Tiger Woods territory. It's no wonder they're good friends. They weren't exactly role models off the court...or course.

MJ was muuuuccchhh worse than Tiger. That dude is a legit ******* to everyone he meets. Tiger has done some really mean shit, but nothing near as bad as MJ was doing to his teammates.

That's not true!

YES IT IS

EDIT: Also, holy shit, I've 1002 posts. I'm kind of pissed I didn't pay attention to my 1000! YAY ME!

I actually met MJ in Vegas once and he was actually pretty cool when I met him. I know the stuff he's done and he's cheated as much as Tiger has (if that's possible), but still don't hate the guy simply because the one time I met him, he was pretty awesome.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
