A thread for little "hacks" you can do around your house.

I'll start.

http://lifehacker.com/top-10-awesome-macgyver-tricks-that-speak-for-themselve-476433796/1724646052

There are ten.

Some others:

  • A little dab of toothpaste makes bug bites stop itching.
  • Vinegar is very good at cleaning soap scum from your glasses/dishes.
  • You can make your own clothing detergent VERY inexpensively. My wife does it. I think the recipe she uses is on pinterest.

Love the post it note. Wish I had that one back when we first moved into our house and I was drilling holes left and right.

Fill a shallow plastic tray with rocks to store your boots when you come in from the snow.

Spray your shovel with nonstick cooking spray, or WD-40, before you use it so snow doesn't stick to it.

To take advantage of passive solar, open up curtains during the day to let the sunshine and heat in.

I do the rock and tray thing, we use cookie sheets, works really well and looks nice. Use pretty river rocks.

Maybe not a hack, but everyone should know about this product. It's called a melamine sponge and it makes cleaning easy.

We've all seen the commercials where the dirt and grime effortlessly disappear with some kind of chemical or cleaning equipment, but this sponge actually works somewhat close to those promises. It makes cleaning the shower fun and can be done with only water. A special thing about this sponge is that it disappear as you use it. I didn't believe how good it was until I tried it and I will always keep them where I live from now on.
