At my old club there was a women member who would tee off at first light every Sat and Sun by herself. She was quite famous.

In 25 years of golf have yet to see this in person.

My girlfriend lives on a golf course and we will watch golfers go by all day on the weekend, we have yet to see a woman playing alone. 10 years of living on the course she says she has yet to see one. There are dozens of men playing alone on a daily basis.

Clearly there is a gender difference re: the social aspect.

Thought I saw it the other day, a woman was in the fairway alone, she had her own cart with just one set of clubs. Then I realized she had out drove the two guys she was playing with by 50 yds.

Not very often at all around here.  But a couple months ago I showed up as a single and was connected to two other singles - both good players.  One was a solo woman, mid 60's, REALLY excellent golfer though at her age she wasn't long at all, but she just didn't miss her target and she played the course perfectly for her length.  Turns out she is also on the state team that goes and determines rates and slopes for all the courses in the southern half of the state.

had a great time - it's fun to play with good players

I can only think of one time this year I was paired with a woman playing alone (she was pretty good - I had to man up to make sure I didn't get beat - LOL)  ... rare indeed

I see older women play as singles at the beginning and end of the season, but usually between May 1 and Sept. 1 I see them in groups.  So I could guess that they are the "diehards" or maybe their friends are snow birds and out of town already.  I have never spoken to them besides the in-passing "nice day" comments.

There is a cute older Brazilian woman who plays and practices at the range a lot by herself at my course.  She is not very good but she loves the game and tries hard to get better.  She is really quiet, but once you talk to her she is so eager to talk golf and ask for advice on her swing, etc.  Her husband will play with her once in a while but he is not in the best of shape and seems to struggle to keep up with her.

Hardly ever see it, but a few weeks ago there was an exception. An older lady teed off in front of us. My partner sees her and rolls his eyes at the starter. The starter tells him, she's not who he should be worried about. Turns out two foursomes of hackers were playing some kind of scramble in front of her. Needless to say we had a lot of time to talk over the nine holes. At first I thought she was mid-60s. Definitely not a long hitter, but solid and consistent. By hole 3, stuff had crunched to a halt. Turns out she's 83 and widowed. Apparently, she gets out every Saturday morning for her nine holes.

The other day while rating a golf course, I saw a woman, about 55 and probably about an 18-22 handicap, playing golf alone.

She had a push cart. She dropped an extra ball once that I saw and hit it. She played 18 holes.

And I couldn't shake how odd the whole thing seemed to me.

Seriously, though, when's the last time you saw someone meeting that description playing alone?

Whether it's simply because women tend to be more social creatures or what, I don't know, but while I've seen plenty of GUYS playing by themselves, I don't think I've ever seen an older woman who isn't a competitive amateur (in scratch type events, I mean) playing by herself.

There's no judgment here of any kind - I was happy for her, truly, because I do think some women miss out on some of the good things that come with playing golf by yourself.

I just found it odd, and even now, days later, cannot shake that feeling. Good for her, though.

That could have been my wife, she plays alone all the times. Decent handicap, she has no problem playing alone. she does play thru mens 2- 3somes. They're too slow, talk to much, if they are oin a cart they have no cart managements, driving to each shot like taxi cab, stare at their shots, pose too long, two many practice swings and spend far too long on the greens- sometmes marking 2 foot putts......Thats why she plays alone.  She'll shoot in the 90s from mens tees in under 3.25 hours- walking.

slow golfers are killing the game.

Halloween is approaching. Do you think she might be some kind of female golfer ghost? Perhaps some unsettled soul that lost the big championship when her final putt lipped out....

  • 2 years later...

Okay this post is is old but I’m 58 and female and recently played golf solo. I never thought twice about it. I wanted to play and no one was available. If I want to exercise or take a walk by myself I do so why not golf???

I love the game. Funny though that I was approached by a male group ahead of me a few weekends ago and they couldn’t believe I was a female and playing by myself. We exchanged numbers as he said his wife was looking for a female golf partner.

I golfed with her last weekend.

Welcome, and play when ever you want. With or with out a partner.

I must live in the part of the country where single women golfers are more common. I see solo women a lot. Some are even lpga gals. Have even joined a few, or they joined me to finish our rounds.

I also think it has to do with the location of the course. Some golf courses are in areas where there is more safety in numbers. :-(

I have to agree with Erik. I can't recall ever seeing this. My buddy and I have played many times against his Sister and her girl friend, but she's never come out with us alone, But then, she and her husband spend most of the Winter in Florida where she claims to play golf nearly every day! Her Husband is not much of a golfer, so I don't imagine he accompanies her very often. I can only guess she's developed some friends down there, but I have no way of knowing.

FWIW, I used to love golfing alone. This was back when I could play a little bit. I was working on my game. Nowadays, the social aspect and just enjoying the round take precedence.

And I will add that yes not all golf courses are best for a female to golf alone.

So what? Am I’m not suppose to golf alone as a female? I love to golf..good or bad...but shouldn’t I be able to go out there?

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
    • Generally speaking, extended warranties are a terrible deal and should almost always be avoided. They are a huge profit center for the companies that offer them, which should tell you almost everything you need to know about how much value most consumers get when purchasing them.  This is correct, and the old adage applies - only buy insurance when you can't afford the loss. This usually doesn't apply to most consumer goods.  To your second question, no I don't believe the offer is fair. They are replacing it, but it is not being replaced at "no cost to you". Since the amount being disputed (over $500) is non-trivial, I would probably push the issue. Don't waste your time on the phone with a customer service agent or a supervisor. They have probably given you all they have the authority to do. Rather, I would look at the terms of your agreement and specifically legal disputes. The odds are you probably agreed to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute. The agreement will outline what steps need to be followed, but it will probably look something like this.  1. Mail the Nordic Track legal department outlining your dispute and indicate you are not satisfied with the resolution offered.  2. Open up a case with the AAA (American Arbitration Association), along with the required documentation. 3. Wait about 4-5 weeks for a case to be opened - at which point someone from Nordic Track's legal department will offer to give you the new model at no cost to you.  They certainly don't want to spend the time and energy to fight you over $500. 4. Enjoy your new Nordic Track at no cost to you. I recently entered binding arbitration against a fairly large and well known company that screwed me over and refused to make it right. In my demand letter, I made a pretty sizeable request that included compensation for my time and frustration. Once it hit their legal department, they cut me a check - no questions asked. It was far cheaper to settle with me than to send their legal team to defend them in the arbitration.
    • I never thought of looking at it on multiple purchases like you said.  Yes, the extended may help me on 1 or 2 items but not the other 5 or 6.
    • Day 84 - Forgot to post yesterday, but I did some more chipping/pitching.    Back/neck were feeling better today, so I did a much overdue Stack session.
