What'd You Shoot Today?

Recommended Posts

Our senior club’s first tournament of 2025 was two days ago. At 11am it was still around 55 degrees f. Off and on rain all day and pace was miserable with our group clocking in at close to 5 1/2 hours.

My first nine was underwhelming with two pars and seven bogies. At the turn I gave myself a mental pep talk. While my scoring was pathetic, I had not had any disasters. Maybe I could salvage something with a decent second nine. One birdie and eight pars later, my comeback was complete: 43/35/78. 8.9 differential  (68.3/123).

I have to give a nod to an unlikely hero, my rain gear. I replaced my 2012 rain suit this year. While it is not high end, it kept me dry and, more importantly, warm.

I have not been playing well so far this year. Had some back tightness issues that have been bothering me for a couple of weeks which didn't help things. Today didn't start much different. Shot 50 on the front, could barely hit the ball in the air. Kept trying to make adjustments to get something to work and wanted to quit. Something must have worked though because I ended up shooting 39 on the back with 6 GIR. Stupid game.

84 today on a 72.9/137. 6709 yards.

First real tournament in 7-8 years for me. It was a tight course that I hadn't played before. Tons of OB and water. I played the same ball the entire round so I guess that was a win?

Tripled my 2nd hole after skulling a pitch over the green and then 3 putting it. Two other doubles and couldn't get any putts to drop. 2nd round of the year and didn't really hit any 'bad' shots besides two pitches. Just am not dialed with the irons yet but kept it in play. Lots of good shots just couldn't convert.

Decent practice round today to get ready for final tournament of the season this weekend.  4 over front 9 and 7 over back 9 with only pars and bogeys

Played first 18 the other day and went 43/43.   Went out and played 9 holes last night and shot....43.   That is pretty much my average so I aint mad at shooting those numbers through the first couple of outings, given the crappy conditions and the winter rust.  For the 86 I shot, I felt it could have been much better as I hit 8 GIR and 8 nGIR.   Greens were so wet, shaggy and slow, it was a struggle just getting the ball to the hole.

Final tournament of the season.  Two day event but I only played the first day.  My round started so well with a shotgun start on the 15th.  Bogey, par x 2, bogey, par, bogey and then things took a turn.  3 putt double, bogey, couple of duffed shots double, bogey, 3 putt double, par, into hazard double, couple of duffed shots double, bogey, par x 3.  Without those 5 silly doubles, I would have had more than a fair chance of a trophy in the stableford event for one day play.  C'est la vie

    • @dennyjonesand I are planning to stay in the Poland, OH area Friday night.  If any want to get together for dinner and/or drinks let us know. We are not sure exactly where we will stay or what time we will get there but if we can hook up with any of you it would be fun.
    • Yes, this was a competition for local golf professionals, so I knew he was at minimum a pretty competent player.  I also asked what kind of shot he needed to play, if he had wanted to go steeply down it could have altered my thinking.  But he needed a pretty level angle of attack to get the ball up, and have it stop near the hole.  Given those factors, and the depth of the grate below the ball, there really was no possibility that the grate would interfere with his swing.
