Yesterday, a 75 at Whispering Woods . Not the best short game day, but the ballstriking was okay, and that was the main purpose.

In the past few weeks:

  • stronger grip (helps prevent tip-across and rolling #3 late)
  • weight centered (it'd gotten too far forward)
  • TURN only

70 on a Par 60 course

Very easy course, played pretty bad really. Highlight for me was 2nd hole par 3 in greenside bunker, blasted out and in the hole for a birdie ( sand game has been great lately )

Then on the 2nd nine I started off with 5 pars in a row.

3 doubles blew my score - my pars are up form last year, but so are my doubles, if I can eliminate them, I should start seeing better scores

On a side note - we had a week of heavy rain and yesterday was warm and sunny - so at any time I had 50000 mosquitoes attacking me - EXTREMELY hard to concentrate on shots

I have to work on some things - hooking/over-drawing my longer irons mainly

Shot a 43 (41 adjusted) on Saturday morning. My sandbagger index is now at 12. My golf league only wants scores from the home course. I don't score well there so my home course index is climbing like a monkey on speed. Somehow I still have to give strokes to guys who are better than me?!?

Shot a 76 on Saturday.  13 pars, 5 bogey's.

While I didn't take advantage of the par 5s AT ALL and lipped out a couple of birdie putts, I am still satisfied with how I played.

Played a new course on Saturday, from the tips because it's a short course (@6480 from the tips, 5850 from the regular tees).  Par 71, 5 par 3s, and 4 of the 5 par 3s are over 200 yds, including one that was 256 yds! almost all carry over a canyon/quarry.  Somehow I hit the edge of the green and managed a par.  Kept my focus most of the day despite the fact that one of my playing partners brought his 4 year old son along.  Managed 3 birdies and shot a 75.

Oh yea! Played my new (used, but new to me) Ping S57s for the second time today. Light wind, nothing like yesterday when the flags were horizontal in 30 mph winds. Two under at the turn (3 birdies, 1 bogie), but could only get one birdie to drop on the back. And two bogies.

Still, one under ain't bad!

Played from the championship tees at the home course.  Shot 81 with only five greens and 28 putts but three penalty strokes.  If I can shore up that last stat, I'll be where I want to be.  If I can hit more greens, I'll be even better!

86 (+14). First time I broke 90. I started off par, par, bogey (barely missed the par putt), par. The first two holes I had never par-ed before, I've always had a mental block for them. My irons were on and I rarely mishit them. The wind was gusting up to 30mph and staying breezy in the 10-20 range most of the time, so it knocked some of my balls down short. But I was hitting good short irons onto greens. I only hit one fat shot all day (hitting fat is my nemesis), so I was happy with myself. My hybrids were gorgeous. Straight and long. I put my 3H out at 220 once. My driver was on-and-off, like it has been for a while. I had a few monster drives: one was 288 yds, according to the cart GPS, and one was 312 yards with a helpful bounce from the cart path. I used to think of myself as a short hitter, and with the irons I'm definitely fairly average, but when I catch my driver or hybrids right I've found I can really rip them. Part of it's switching to a ball that seems to fit me a bit better (the TaylorMade Burner TP LDP), but part of it is improved swing style. Now I need to just tame the hook... Since I got myself out of trouble well with my wedges and I didn't chunk an iron all day, I wasn't too surprised with my performance. I've been hovering at 91 and 92 for months, always making the same mistakes. Today I simply didn't make those same stupid mistakes, and I knocked 5 or 6 strokes off my score. And that's with putting 2 balls in the water, too. Weight forward, hold the flying wedge, keep the right arm connected to the body, shoulders steep -- that's where most of the credit goes.

Saturday shot a 99 at my home course - started with a par and a GIR and those were the only ones I would see all day. Sunday, at a much easier course, shot an 85 with my typical 48/37 split, closing with a bird.

95 on a new course for me. 43 / 52. weather was great through 11 holes then all hell broke loose. wind and rained followed by hail. horn sounded to clear the course. after a 30 minute break in the clubhouse i just couldn't get back in a rythm. if nothing else it was a day outside with friends on a nice course. Shot 81 today, Par 71 6900 yards .. 40/41. Didn't make any putts; one of the best ballstriking round of the year. I feel like I've really made strides the past week or so hitting the ball. Now it's time to start scoring. Hitting more greens now and three putted a few times..I'm putting from further away so I'm making a good amount of pars but need to stay away from the doubles and bogey's (bogey'd last two holes because of three putting)

GIR - 7/18

Fairways - 9/12

Putts - 33

Played 27 holes today, shooting 35 - 42 - 35. Having a real problem with the "bogey train", one bad hole turns into three or four in a row before I can get my head back in the game.

88 yesterday at Classic Golf Club, par 72. One blow up hole, a par 5 that took me 8 to get home, and 3 3 putts. Gotta get out on the practice green and just practice my putting.

Monday i shot an 87, par 72, 44/43. On the front nine i had 3 double bogeys, and the back nine i started with two 8's. My ball striking was decent, but my short game is horrible. I wasted probably 4 strokes on the front nine, and at least 5 on the back nine. I just have no game with in 100 yards, except for putting.

Tuesday: morning round @ Riverbend, played white tees (69.8/120) scored 89 (43/46) then afternoon round from the blues (72.1/135) scored 86 (40/46). My putting was atrocious in both rounds - I managed to 4-putt a GIR hole the 2nd round, in addition to losing 3 balls during the round. Should have broke 80

Today: early round @ Riverside, played blue tees (71.0/123) scored 87 (41/46). Was in the bunkers a lot. On 18, had a 6-foot chip for eagle but ended up with par. Couldn't even birdie the SOB.

Now that I think I'm over my anger stage, I am pretty happy with how I've been playing. 6,600-6,800 tees are still new to me and I'm having to re-learn some of my local courses now. I just need to figure out WTF is going on after the turn. My front nine scores have been solid - not sure if I'm losing focus or what.

New personal best!

Scored 83 (40 + 43) from the whites on a easy par 70 course (65.0 / 103).

Got really lucky (can't claim skill) on about four putts.

Stats:

2 birdies (whoo-hoo! -- first time ever to get more than one birdie in a round!)

5 pars (happy with that)

8 bogeys

2 doubles

1 triples

30 putts (my best score here so far!!!)

6 GIR (!Oops!)

2 of 12 FWs (I was only just off on several, so I recovered okay)

1 penalty

My driver completely deserted me on the back nine --- I don't know what was going on. Felt like I did everything as usual, but I only got about 210 yds (normally 230), and then I started line-drive / topping it.  Gotta hit the range again.

Still -- so stoked to have beaten my previous best by two strokes!

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
