What'd You Shoot Today?

Today was an ugly cold damp day following heavy rain so the course was sloppy wet......... temps were in the 50s.   I figured the course wouldn't be busy, so I had to play!!!  Tee'd off just late enough to allow for a 3hr round before dark......

Drumm Farm GC:  Par72  72.5CR 137slope 6564yds

40-39=79

The yardage played more like 7500yds than 6500yds!!........LOL...I had a few long approaches!!!   No roll coupled with damp cold air made the course play stupid long.

Fairways: 10/14

Greens: 6

Putts: 31

Birdies: 1

Penalties: 1

I hit solid golf shots and hit the first 2 GIR,  but left myself difficult putts and 3-putted them both!!  AAaaaaarghhh!!!!   Starting cold without hitting a practice putt probably played a role, but I accept this for what it is and accept the result.  Beyond needing 6 putts on the first two greens, the rest of the day showed continued spring progress.   Once the course firms up and gets into pristine condition, I'll be firing on all cylinders.

Three competitions into the new season two in the buffer zone and then -4 ( to Hcp ) dropped two shots on 17 and 18 which was trying to keep the round together..........something to work on in the future!

86.  ...but it felt more like a 96 because I just couldn't get the driver working...

On the positive side, I played quickly, finished in about 2:15, and I don't think anyone notice me show up late to work.

Played my first "round" of the year today other than a par 3 course. 9 holes (par was 35) and I shot 42!....using 2 balls and playing best ball with myself. That's still pretty good for me though.

And lest anyone think I was not following proper etiquette by playing 2 balls, I was the only one on the course. It was a 9 hole municipal course and it has been raining here for days. The course hasn't been mowed in a week and the guy in the pro shop told me not to worry about paying because it wouldn't be right to charge me with the course in that condition.

So I got to play for free and as the only person on the course. The fairways were like hitting out of the rough, but it was the most stress free and enjoyable golf I have ever played.

41-39/80  2 birdies,8 pars, 6 bogies,2 doubles. Had 2 double bogies on the front nine, dunked one in the water on the third and fluffed a chip on the ninth, so was close to my goal today of breaking 80. need to eliminate the doubles and I might succeed.

My game is definitely improving and the winter rust is falling away............

Drumm Farm GC:  Par72  72.5CR 137slope 6564yds

36 -38=74

Fairways: 7/14

Greens: 9

Putts: 27

SSaves: 1/1

4 Birdies

Penalties: 1  .......but I made a nice bogey save

I also had 2 zero putts! Those don't SUKK!!!  I holed-out from a 7-8ft deep greenside bunker after hitting a horrible approach to get there.......LOL    The other was a simple chip-run.  I feel like I'm starting to get my MOJO back and I LIKE IT!    I had one stupid double-B that I'd like to forget, but that's besides the point!  Hahaha

I wanted to play today, but was invited by my best golf partner, John, for the last 25+ years to go to the range. You see, last February 19 John had his hip replaced, and this was the first day that he hit balls since the operation. He hit about 30 balls, make good contact with about 10, and then we went to lunch. (I hit a few, as well, but I wanted to be there to encourage John on his journey back to the first tee.)  It was a great day, and we will be back next week. :-)

Thursday...White Hawk GC:

From the Gold tees, 6509 yds. 72.0/130,  44-41...85 with 2 birdies on the round.  Real happy with my play and with that score this early in the season, and I'm loving my new X Hot irons!  Heavy rain here all weekend, so no golf for me this weekend...

I did net 71 today.   I read someone posting their net score.  Wow, I admit that really sounds so much better than saying I carded 91.   The stat: 3 GIRs, 6 pars, 1 birdie, and 8 out of 14 fairway hits, 31 putts.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
