What'd You Shoot Today?

Been playing golf on and off for 30 years. Left the game for years at a time. Started back up a year and a half ago and been shooting high 90's low 100's. Saturday I shot my best score ever an 83. Changed one thing with my swing and it was magic. Playing again Sunday, and will find out if it was a fluke

Played the back today.  39.  4 pars 4 bogies, and a lone birdie.  Two of those bogies were boneheaded decisions all for the slim chance at an eagle putt.  Oh well, I knew they were dumb when I stepped up to the ball and tried to pull them off.

First time poster!

Played our club championship this weekend. 83-75-76. Had a 2-hour rain delay in middle of back 9 on day 1.  At restart we had to immediately go out with no warm up and beat darkness. Sadly I started double double.  But overall a positive weekend with the sticks!

79/77 at my home course. Windy, cold and no roll weekend. Poor ball striking and putting. Amazing game around the greens, all the shots with my 60°, even the bump an run with the face riddicusly close.

Semi-Finals of the match play tournament last night at my local club, shot 40/38 (par 70) to record the 2UP win to advance to the finals!  Was also my best 18 hole score ever there as well as tying my best 9 hole score!  All the work I've been doing in the last month on Key #2 is paying off.

Welcome. I'm glad all the money I've lost to you will now increase as you get even sneakier good than you already are. This is a great site. See you tomorrow night.

To touch on @dmay_golf post, golf is quite elusive to me when it matters. Preparing for our club championship I shot 78-78-35. On the weekend I shot 80-85-85. Not my best. Then last night I shot 73 and tonight 44-36 for an 80 from the championship tees. I'm very close to finding the right spot with my game.

37+42 for 79. 8 strokes better than my best rounds (87 three times) this year, dumbfounded. I honestly never thought I'd break 80 again, but I don't know what to think now...

Yes, I know @kpaulhus very well. We play a lot of gold together (sadly he's moving in a month). I jokingly call him my human ATM....  But seriously we always have great matches and lots of fun.

He's the reason I joined this site.

Wednesday,

Kittyhawk GC, Hawk Course, Dayton, OH

47-43-90

Great weather and a light day at work lead me to take the afternoon off and get this solo round in.

This is a pretty good score for me on this relatively hazardous course. It's actually something considering how much of the front nine I spent in the traps. Thankfully, they have some sand in the traps for a change and I did a decent job extricating myself from them. Three pars to finish the round had me nearly breaking 90 for the first time on the Hawk (of course, I have broken 90 on several easier courses).

One interesting thing was the distance I was getting with my driver. Normally, 230 yards is about all I get, but here I had several in the 250-260 range. A couple of the sandies were the direct result of my assuming I wasn't going to reach the traps. Not sure where that extra yardage came from or how long it will stick around.

"Golf is cruel mistress."

Same course, same clubs, same golfer.  81,82, .....95!!!!

Seemingly, I wasn't hitting the ball that differently. I hit driver 13 times, 12 were in the fairway or just off. The one bad one, I got lucky and could have salvaged bogey at worse, but tried to be a hero and got an 8. Bad judgement cost a couple of strokes on other holes. I had 3 shots that were just bad ball striking, but would up being very costly.

Excepting the aforementioned 3 really bad strikes, there is no hole in this 6000 yards that I should have a 6 on.

Yes, I recently followed my best round of the year with my worst.

I need to just stop tinkering with my swing. All it does is cause misery.

I mixed it up a little this morning.  I typically play the white tees at my home course (69.8 / 129 - 6147)... but when I arrived, one of the seniors that regularly frequent the club asked if I'd join their little money game group.  I had intended to play alone, so... I agreed and joined in.  They decided that everybody would play the gold tees (67.2 / 121 - 5553).

I had never played from anything other than the white or blue tees at this course, so I figured it'd be fun to try something new.

It worked out nicely because, for whatever reason, the ball was not going anywhere for me off the tee.  I struggled on a few holes throughout (3 doubles and 1 triple), but managed to squeak out a 41 - 42 = 83.  Not horrible for stepping out of the car, being asked to join and jumping on the first tee all in a matter of the first 5 minutes.

I got out tonight and played 9 holes but 2 ball golf.  I was 2 over with ball #1 and 3 over with ball #2. 15 putts with ball #1 and 14 putts with ball #2.  I had one birdie with each ball.  Great night of exercise and golf.  Really happy with the results

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
    • I had an article on Cam Smith pop up along with this..... Current major eligibility list for all LIV Golf players Here's a look at which majors, if any, all LIV Golf players are eligible.
