This is a common problem among amateur golfers that has been affectionately named a “chicken wing.” Some pros have managed to play well in spite of it (as Lee Westwood can attest) but because hitting the ball well consistently is so reliant on impeccable timing, that same move usually fails them under pressure (as Lee Westwood can attest).

................

Spieth’s left arm is bent that way because Spieth is working hard to keep his golf club’s clubface from rotating through impact. Spieth has figured out that the less the clubface rotates through the ball, the less he has to rely on timing, so the more repeatable it is. Spieth is essentially hitting a glorified block all the time, which is pretty hard to mess up, in any sport.

I like the write up and the explanation of the hows and whys of Speiths somewhat unorthodox swing, but I don't understand.  Aren't the two paragraphs up above completely at odds with each other?  I mean, is his move more or less reliant on timing than an "orthodox" swing?  It surely can't be both. :-P

I think I understand.  Maybe I don't, but here is my best shot.  The first statement is correct, it usually fails them under pressure (the second statement is incorrect).  It also should or ought to result is some loss of power.  Jordan then compensates for both of these in 2 ways:

(1) Slow play.  Lots of practice swings, backing off, etc.  Why?  Because he knows he can't trust his swing.

(2) To compensate for power, one would have to get more weight forward.  A lot more.  He is the only player that rolls up on his left foot after impact.

I said he should take a vacation, no golf no nothing, I guess I'm showing I'm old fashioned. If you follow Rickie Fowler's Snapchat (Spieth is on vacation with him), there's lots of video of them on the course, tooling around, in the gym, at the beach, it's like you're there with them. I guess these are the times we live in, everything's public, which is fine, ymmv, I'd want to totally immerse myself in something totally different for a bit.

Fun read, good to see that even Jack and Player like to play Monday morning quarterback.  A game or B game, if Spieth doesn't screw up on 12 he's likely winning his second Masters.  I'm not taking anything away from Willett but at the turn Willett could not have won without Spieth screwing up.

I also don't agree with Jack about Spieth getting a big head, he seems like a pretty grounded kid with a support team that would ensure his head fits in his hat.

You knew this was going to happen sooner or later. Johnny Miller on Spieth's bent lead arm at impact. Don't listen to him, Spieth.

Quote

“He has a tendency with that bent left elbow to come down with the face open,” Miller said in a teleconference call in advance of the Players Championship next week. “He has been doing it quite a bit this year. He really did it [at the Masters]. That was an amazing miss in the water and an amazing fat shot in the water.

If this isn't agent-marketing-hype speak, I dunno what is.

Quote

“Our ultimate goal is for the brand and the foundation to transcend the sport," Spieth's agent Jay Danzi told D Magazine.

Whoa.

A win changes the perspective at least a bit, though Day & Rory weren't in this field.

Quote

The victory is Spieth’s eighth of his burgeoning pro career, and he now joins Jason Day and Adam Scott as the only players with multiple wins this season on the PGA Tour, having won the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in January.

“Actually at this point last year we had two wins, so we’re kind of right on track,” he said. “Obviously we had a major last year and almost one this year, but things seem to be kind of back on track, in contention three of the last four events, and that’s the way we’ve tried to keep on looking at it.”

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
