What is the single worst common on-course breach of etiquette?

"Golf Digest" had a number of their staff respond to the question of what is the worst breach of etiquette.  Several mentioned issues that don't really happen during a round or are not limited to golf (e.g. last minute bailing on your buddies).

For me the common worst breach is moving within my peripheral vision area while I am making a stroke.  I may not like some other issues (e.g. talking or making noise during my stroke) and others I can shrug off.  The moving typically leads to a poor shot and that really grates.

 

How about everyone else.  Limit -  one to a customer.

I would say walking on the line of a putt. It is usually accidental, but it does happen. My wife does it on my line every time we play!

this one.  by far.  just means youre either ignorant or you just dont care about the course and your fellow golfers.

Repair someone else pitch mark on the green and filling up someone else divot hole on a par 3 tee box is good karma

Yeah, it's not repairing pitch marks. I repair at least one pitch mark every time I'm on the green, often more than one if it won't delay anything.

Chose walking in putt line.  It borders on complete disregard for the other player(s).

None of the other stuff bothers me at all.  I can hit a bad shot in complete silence with everyone on the planet adhering to the 'quiet' signs.

I have to agree with everyone else on not fixing pitch marks.  I see way too many dime-sized brown marks/indentations on the greens.

I might be in the minority here, but I really don't care about others walking on my putting line. The purpose of it is to that so they don't leave marks or anything that might affect your putt. But without metal spikes, that rarely happens.

That said, my golf shoes will sometimes leave spike marks on the green. I am careful not to walk on anybody's line because of that. But someone who does leave marks can walk wherever he wants, in my view.

Obvious caveat is don't do it while I'm putting.

Walking in the line of putt is probably the one that happens the most, but it doesn't bother me all that much, most of the time when this happens is when I'm 20 or more feet from the hole and my chances of making the putt are slim to begin with.  It rarely if ever happens when I'm close to the flag.

Sounds, people talking, music, people moving don't bother me at all.  I can talk and swing the club while I play.  Hitting out of turn, don't care.  If you don't tend the flag or take it out, I'll ask.  Walking off the green to next tee, don't care.

Only that bothers me on the golf course, other than my own play, is sow play.  Other than that I'm in my own world on the course for the most part and just don't let other people's play affect me.

I voted other, because I don't like unrepaired dents in the green. This should have been on the list. I always make a point to fix 4 or 5 on each green. 

I also don't like picking up putts before they are holed.

I put talking, but would liked to have been able to choose the moving as well.

That by far.    Judging from where the ball marks are on the green, I mean right up close to the hole, there are a lot of good golfers who are not repairing their ball marks on the greens.

This is pretty bad as well, but I figured that we are allowed to fix ball marks. Divots are kind of a part of life for me, I rarely have a nice fairway lie anyway. I'm usually on a hump, tree, wood chips or something. . .

Too bad we couldn't select multiple or all items, we only got to choose the "worst" evil. . .

I so thoroughly don't care about people walking on lines of putts. We're conditioned to be pissed about it and it doesn't make a lick of difference. 

Yeah, not fixing pitch marks and divots is really the only one that materially impacts others. But a lot of that is just lack of education about what people are responsible for.

Talking during my stroke annoys me to no end but I play music so it's not the noise itself that bothers me;  I think it's the lack of respect.  I typically don't say anything but I will step away from the shot when it happens.  My buds pick up on it and usually quit, sometimes after giving me a rash of shit for being so sensitive.  Fk em (but I love em).  

Sure, people should repair their pitch marks but this doesn't affect my game because I check my line before I putt and repair any that might have an impact.

Walking on line of putt. Especially if the walker is out of shape and drags the feet, making the footprint worse.

Playing music too loud is a more recent one.

Two others are a non-issue if the course mandates "ready golf."

• Playing out of turn (within reason)
• Leaving green before others have finished (if you can do so without making a lot of noise)

I put moving during a stroke (especially if they're standing directly off my right side so I see them during my backswing).  I probably see people walking on the line of a putt more often, but honestly that doesn't bother me at all.  Talking/making noise during a stroke does irk me a little, but the driving range I go to is always noisy so it doesn't really affect me when I'm playing since I'm used to it.
