I thought I start a board game thread for those who play these type of games. I've been playing board games for as long as I can remember. Monopoly was a game I played a lot as a kid with family members. My dad's side of the family was big into different card games. My grandpa knew a ton of them. When I met my friends in high school we got into playing board games.

Our favorite had to be Axis & Allies. A WWII based game.

The second most game we played was Settler's of Catan. A great resource and building game where the first one to get 10 points win. It involves collecting and trading resources and a bit of luck. Another game we played a lot was House on Haunted Hill. As you explore a mansion, pulling room cards as you explore, you have a higher chance of getting a haunt. Depending on the room and other factors the haunt begins and now the group must survive or defeat the haunt.

Just recently I bought a few more games to try out. Forbidden Stars is a Warhammer series game. You basically take control of one faction, colonize planets, build armies and wage war against other opponents.

So far the gem of the game is Space Alert. It's a collaboration game where you each play a person on a space ship that exit hyperspace. You must survive threats, like space monsters, internal threats like raiding parties, ect.. The game play is that you play a CD that in 10 minutes will allow you to plan out your actions, when threats come in, if you get new data and a few other actions. After 10 minutes you must play all your actions and see how it plays out round by round. If one section of your ship is destroyed you lose the game. It's just a very fast paced game where you need to work together to get a all your actions to line up to survive space. My friend and I played about 5 games in about 2 hours. Every game is new and just as fun.

Anybody else into any board games, or what is your favorite board game, card games, or table top game?

My wife and I love board games. We play them a lot in the summer at our cottage. Our favorites are Scrabble, cribbage, Sequence, Mille Bournes and Backgammon. We play alone or with our neighbors. Farkel Party is also a fun game for a larger group. There are also a few card games that we'll play with more people like Pitch, 99. We play 99 on vacation a lot because you can play it quickly and anywhere.

With the younger kids we play Apples to Apples, which can be fun. We are always looking for new games too. I used to like Monopoly, but it takes too long. Risk was a big one I played as a kid.

Back in my twenties it was AD&D, Rifts (similar to AD&D but more sci-fi than fantasy), Axis and Allies, and Battlemech. Loved all of them.

Now that my kids are at the age where they can play stuff, we're bringing back our childhood classics: Monopoly, Sorry!, Crazy 8s, Krokinole, Pictionary...

When they get a little older I'll teach them Cribbage, Eucher and all the poker variants.

Mille Bournes is great.  Gonna have to get that one again.  Haven't played it in years.

I liked Stratego as well.

YOU SUNK MY BATTLESHIP!

You can pretty much get all these games quick and dirty on your mobile device, w/multiplayer options and bells and whistles, probably cheaper too, but not quite the same as the analog version. Get off my lawn!

Battleship and Stratego are more rainy day games. With Mille Bournes, I get to practice my out-ray-ge-ous French accent a la Inspector Clouseau.

Actually, this is a great way to deal with slow play! Play golf with people who like to play board games as well. . .

I guess you could call Chess, Checkers, Backgammon and Go your classic tabletop games. If you ever get the chance, try Chinese Chess. No, not Chinese Checkers. Chess. Similar to Chess Chess, but you got fewer pawns, your Bishop, named Minister or Elephant in Chinese is more limited and there's a cool piece called the Cannon.

Axis & Allies is a classic and is, imo, a far superior game to Risk.  However, I actually like another game in that series better:  Shogun (sometimes sold as "Samurai Swords").

Flux, Guillotine, and Bang! are great quick games, more card-based than board.  Love Letter is fun also.  Cards Against Humanity can be fun with the right group, but I've seen too many groups single someone out and try to deliberately not pick whichever card X put into the mix.  I think it works better as an ice breaker for friends-of-friends.

I haven't played a tabletop miniatures game in over a decade, which is too bad;  I used to really enjoy them.  I took second place in a Clan War tournament many many (many) years ago.  I also remember enjoying Great Rail Wars.  Once upon a time, I was a halfway decent painter of various miniatures too.

I saw a few traditional RPGs mentioned above;  these were a major event for me when I was younger, and now my current group meets about once a month.  We swap GMs out after each campaign, typically, and switch systems.  I'm planning to pitch a Savage Worlds adventure to my friends for our next one (a friend is running the current one in D&D).

Lastly, when I'm driving and traffic is slow, I play cribbage with license plates.

I have to agree. If we are talking A&A then I would go with the 2004 or 2011 editions. In the original A&A tanks were really worthless with their attack and defense compared to their cost. In the later editions they finally made them better and they added in artillery. They also scaled the cost of the units better.

A&A Europe is also a great game to play. LOTS of land battles!

Man, I miss RPG. Used to play 2-3 times a week. AD&D will always be my favorite, but the Paladium system really had some great games. Rifts was awesome and the Psionics class was such a great counterpoint to magic. Order a pizza and roll up some spliffs - Good times!

I'm fairly certain my version of A&A predates those... I'm sure I bought it in the late 90s.  I didn't realize they were still updating it.

The main game was actually created in 1984, but it's been reprinted up till probably 2004 when they came out with the revised edition. This upgraded the tanks defense to 3 versus a previous 2. It also added artillery and changed the unit costs. The map was changed a bit as well.

In 2009 they came out with the anniversary edition. This added in the country of China, which was run in conjunction with USA. Also they added in Italy, which is run by Germany. Also the board is gigantic and there are a lot more land territories.
