Who are you taking?

  1. 1. Are you taking Jordan Spieth or the field given 2:1 odds (or 1:2 odds? Whichever pays double to take Jordan.)?

Jordan Spieth is playing. Will he win again?

I'm taking the field bet.

Hope Jordan wins, but winning is beating everyone else in the event.

Too many other great players can have exceptional tournament rounds nowadays.

It would be cool if it came down to Jordan and Hideki again?

Maybe if he were playing very well going into a less star studded tournament in Texas. No Day or Fowler, but McIlroy, Watson, Rose, DJ, Schwartzel, Matsuyama and former winners Scott, Haas, plus DJ came close a couple of times.

I love LA... we love it

I'll be there on Sunday, I'll ask him when I see him.

Saw some of the course this weekend.  It's gorgeous, as it always is for the L.A. Open (and probably is the rest of the year, too).  Going to be a great event.  I'll be there Fri Sat and Sun this year.  Can't wait!

Sergio has a decent record here and will probably be in the mix on Sunday, and Justin Rose's tee-to-green game should be great at Riviera. That being said, we're all wanting a Rory-Jordan Sunday back-nine showdown!  Things probably won't work out that way, but I bet it'll be a pretty star-studded leader board on Sunday.

Lots of cooks. From one POV, w/all these people, you wouldn't think he's one of the favorites.

Big Jordan fan, but I would have to take the field. His driving and putting isn't quite right lately.

I too am a big Jordan fan, but it's hard not to take the field against one player.  Even when Tiger was in his prime, he still only won more than 50% of his tournament starts twice, 2006 & 2008 on the PGA Tour.

2006 15 8 53.3%
2008 6 4 66.7%

Spieth was 5 for 25 last year, with a bunch of seconds and was incredible last year with over 12 million in earnings.  And he missed 4 cuts.

Another reason to take the field is the presence of Rory McIlroy. He appears pretty focused this week. Dropping down to #3 in the world has got his attention.

Would love to see a Rory, Jordan duel on Sunday.

And the odds aren't in the favor of the one.  Would have to be better odds than that for me, at least to bet on Spieth.

I don't know who "the field" would be.  I guess I could look it up but it is probably different on each site.  Regardless, I would probably take Speith at 2 to 1.  But most likely neither The Field or Speith will win resulting in a push.

Just in case some don't know the definition (as indicated by some of the responses); "The Field" is the remaining group of competitors whose odds are not individually listed to win, usually just the longshots.  I doubt anyone in the top 50 would be included in "The Field" bet.

His odds to win outright were 6-1 on the site I looked at yesterday, same as Rory's.  There were no Field bets available.

The field is everyone else.

No, it's "the rest of the players not named Jordan Spieth."

If you figure Jordan has a 51% chance to win, you're better off choosing him at 2:1 odds. There are some years and some tournaments when you could have made a lot of money betting like that for Tiger Woods.

Nope, just google: "The Field in betting" and you'll find the definition on plenty of sites.  It is not everyone else.

Here I did it for you:

Field
Betting on golf tournaments and other sports (horse racing) events that have a large number of entrants often allows for a bet on the field. The field is the group of all the entrants not listed with their own odds. The field can contain a large number of entrants, but typically each entrant has only a tiny chance of actually winning the event. If an entrant had a good chance of winning, he or she would not be lumped into the field.

Check any betting site you want.

Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
