Ok so I think my problem is that I just haven't played or practiced enough to get this shot in the locker.   I don't seem to get into this situation much when I am playing because I hit greens ok, but when I do get into it then it kills my score.  I'll take my lob wedge to the practice range and see what I can do - thanks to everyone for the helpful comments.

When you go to the practice range, place a golf towel on the practice green at different spots and practice chipping so the ball lands on the towel.

This drill really worked for me. Much better chip shots out on the course.

I often go to the course as a walk on and sometimes it takes a while to get worked in.  I take that time to work on my short game.  We have a practice area that allows chipping and taking a divot.  Many courses don't want golfers to chew up their practice turf, but this course has set aside an area to do that.

I've spent hours looking for the worst possible lies and getting the ball on the green within reasonable distance to make a putt.  Find a divot 3" deep and hit out of that.  Find some rough 5 inches deep.  Put your ball just in front of a massive weed and get that on the green.  Even though you can unplug an embedded ball, I'll step on the ball and get that on the green.

This really helps with concentration and making a clean strike.

I looked at videos yesterday of how to hit the short approach shots. There are 15 different ways to do it that will work for someone.

I like the simple ball in the middle of the square stance approach for most shots with a few mods for special circumstances. The trad technique were overly complicated. There was a different stance for every club.

More weight on the forward side helps with cleaner strikes.
