Now, I am new at the game, and still experimenting to find what works for me. I now believe I am pretty close to completing the task, and this after buying and selling various woods, putters, and irons. I am now on my 4th driver, and believe it or not, as a result of wheeling and dealing I haven't spent anything. I have a couple of cheap hybrids, that work really well for me, and an inexpensive 2nd hand odyssey putter that has helped me no end. When I got rid of my original very cheap Dunlop irons, for the same price I paid for them, I decided to go mid range, and bought a new set of Benross Max Speed irons for a bargain price. Whilst they were decent irons, I never really felt comfortable with them. I didn't have a four iron, so I went on ebay and purchased a used Ping G2 4HL (high launch) iron. Although a green spot, and I really needed blue, I still couldn't believe how wonderful it made it hitting a ball. After a few weeks of hunting around on the internet, I did a deal on a mint condition set of G2's, knowing a few of them needed new grips. I purchased these from a golf pro via ebay, and he adjusted the lie to a blue dot for me free of charge. I used them today, and WOW what a bloody difference. On one occasions I whacked the ball with the toe, and it still went long and straight. Getting underneath the ball with even the 3 iron is easy.  I have replaced my kit bit by bit, and have come to the conclusion that second hand good stuff is much better than new cheaper stuff. STOP PRESS STOP PRESS. I have two very cheap Dunlop hybrids which are excellent, so maybe I am wrong ???????????????????

In my bag (Motocaddy Light)

Taylormade Burner driver, Taylormade 4 wood, 3 x Ping Karsten Hybrids, 6-SW Ping Karsten irons with reg flex graphite shafts. Odyssey putter, 20 Bridgestone e6 balls, 2 water balls for the 5th hole, loads of tees, 2 golf gloves, a couple of hand warmers, cleaning towel, 5 ball markers, 2 pitch mark repairers, some aspirin, 3 hats, set of waterproofs, an umbrella, a pair of gaiters, 2 pairs of glasses. Christ, it's amazing I can pick the bloody thing up !!

I have to agree. This year I felt it was time to replace everything but my irons and putters but ballin' on a budget can sometimes be hard. I got most of my clubs through second-hand dealers and so far it's turned out great. I feel that it's almost always worth it to look for models that are a year or two old and save a few hundred dollars rather than drop $450 on the latest driver. The technology might be slightly inferior but overall, a year or two in development won't make a noticeable difference, at least to me.

The toughest part is just having the patience to find exactly what you're looking either online or in shops, and in good condition. It takes a bit more time but in the long run I definitely saved a lot of money for some pretty high quality clubs.

Well said.  I'd have a tough time feeling comfortable purchasing a used driver (versus previous year mint condition clubs on discount), as I'd worry about small cracks/fractures from wear & tear that may not be completely visible.  It may just be that my buddy has a short fuse, but driver also seems to be the easiest club for him to slam after a poor shot...the temper is a work in progress.

Structural integrity of used irons/wedges strikes me as being a bit more cut & dry.  If the groves are in good shape with no signs of dents, you can upgrade the sticks without breaking the bank.  Easily justifiable, too:  "But Babe, they were on sale...just like your shoes."

That makes sense. I bought the head for my driver this year from a shop that used it for fitting. They usually take pretty good care of those i.e. tape them up and watch those who use them. Plus lefty clubs usually have lower traffic than the righties... I guess that is one of the rare advantages we have when it comes to shopping for gear.

New gear is cool. This spring I have totally overhauled most of my rig. It started when my buddy came out to visit and handed me his Taylormade r7 driver as he had just upgraded to an M1. That got me searching for a new 3 wood (which is primarily) the club I tee off with.

I found a near mint taylormade R7 3 wood on eBay for $79.00. I could not believe how practically new that club was given its age. Next I bought a set of used Cleveland cg16 Wedges once again on eBay. Used but in good condition  grooves still nice and defined for $69.00.

Lastly I found a great deal on brand new still in plastic taylormade rocketbladez on eBay for $238.00. These shipped in a Taylor made factory sealed box from tee2green. The Irons arrived last night and I hit them today at the range.

So for around $400 Give or take, I was able to overhaul a good portion of my bag with much newer technology than I have been using. I was playing the same set of Cleveland TA5 Irons since 1999.

My 5 wood and hybrid are both Ping g20 that I bought used a few years back when I thought I liked pings, kind of a Phoenix thing with Ping (I've been here since 1999). I'll keep those 2 clubs just as a homage and they don't ever really put me in any trouble when playing them.

My Putter is a taylormade ROHO I from around 1997, it will always be in my bag.

I have a set of G20 irons as well as G30s. According to trackman the distance is exactly the same. The G20's have graphite shafts and the 30;s the TP 95 shafts. Whats interesting is I found a set of Eye 2 irons at a savation army for 6.00 and took a few to the course yesterday, The length of the 5 iron matches my g30 7 iron but the distance carries the exact same as my G30 5 iron. The eye 2s actually feel very good,,

I played the Eye2's throughout high school. I lent them to a friend I didn't know very well a few years back and never saw them again... It's a shame because I wouldn't mind taking them out and playing a round for old time's sake. I'd definitely say they are some of the best clubs ever made.

I've recently upgraded from an old set of Ping Eye2 irons to Ping G30's.   I've read that the improvement will be substantial, but I'll have to wait and see about that.

Sounds like you went about this in a very intelligent fashion, pain. First quality, name brand goods are just that, even when used. Although obvious abuse and negligence can happen, I think it would be rare. And it's not like buying a used car. There are no moving parts, nor an electrical system. Even when there are moving parts, well built and maintained gear holds its own. My buddy uses a Model 1896 Remington 12 Gauge double barrel shotgun, that was built in 1903 for wingshooting! It works like the day it was built!

I think the most impressive thing is having the lies bent to fit you. Probably 99.9% of golfers have no idea of the importance of lie and ignore it completely.

    • Day 364: About an hour and a half practice session. Spent most of it at the range. Did a solid 30 minutes of work on my priority piece, with filming. I think it's improving, but will probably check in on Evolvr to make sure. Then spent the last ~20 minutes putting, working mostly on short putts.

    • Day 79 (19 July 25) - Band rehearsal this morning - got home midafternoon, opted to work more with the magnetic alignment tool with the wedges.  Used it to work on face position at the bottom of the swing arc - followed up with easy pitches up to 50yds.  Seeing better face control and over improved accuracy toward target…session was cut short with pop up rain showers.
    • This is a great discussion. Other parts of the course where there are houses have white stakes and signs. This keeps people from trespassing and hitting shots on their property. There is another county road on the east side of the course that does not have white stakes like the hole I described. I checked the score card and there is nothing to indicate these roadways are OB. I think a county drainage ditch would be considered government right-of-way so it is the peoples land 🤣. But you are in the power industry and know more about those sorts of things than me.
