The original vote was only decided by a handful of votes. My guess is a few of the original NO voters succumbed to the massive media pressure and have switched. Now they know it will pass. Too bad the world can't just leave a private club alone to do what it wants.

Or they decided they'd rather have the Open keep coming back.

Or perhaps they decided they want the Open Championship after all.

I would believe this.

Having conviction can be expensive, I guess the members weren't willing to pay the price of remaining a men only club.

They already knew at the first vote it would likely cost them the Open. The only thing that has changed since the first vote is the media firestorm.

You are comparing two totally different things. 10 guys changing their vote on club membership versus millions of people who voted for their country to be independent. Not even a close comparison.

The R&A called their bluff and carried through on the rota change. That's not immaterial.

It appears as though they're going to give this another shot.

Also worth noting; many of the posts in this thread in defense of the club are some version of "they are a private club, they can do as they choose."  I don't totally disagree.  But I also don't remember noticing during the first go-round that "they" actually already do want to admit women as members.  The 373 year old clubs constitution requires this change to be agreed upon by 2/3 of the members and the article says they fell 3% short.  So, it is worth something to point out that 64% percent of the members agreed to allow women even at that first vote.
