Local kids did well this year in the draft. St. Louis lives up to 'Heartland of Hockey' reputation in NHL Draft

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- St. Louis was represented in a major way during the first round of the NHL Draft on Friday as five players who grew up in the area and played for the St. Louis AAA Blues youth hockey club were selected.

During a week in which the NHL expanded into Las Vegas, the draft had an international flavor to it with a record 12 Americans selected in the first round, besting the old mark of 11 in 2010.

Forward Matthew Tkachuk, the son of former Blues winger Keith Tkachuk, was taken sixth overall by the Calgary Flames. The Arizona Coyotes had the seventh pick, with which they drafted center Clayton Keller, another AAA Blues alum.

With the 11th pick, the Ottawa Senators selected St. Louis-bred forward Logan Brown, the son of former Blues defenseman Jeff Brown. The Minnesota Wild took center Luke Kunin with the 15th pick, and the Boston Bruins wrapped up the St. Louis selections by taking forward Trent Frederic with pick 29.

Well my Winnipeg Jets got the 2nd pick overall and have some prospects this year that should be ready to play.

And how about those two horrible trades yesterday... Montrealers gonna hate Berchevin am\nd Edmontoners gonna hate  Chiarelli..

I'll miss Taylor Hall.  He's got an attitude, for sure, but can really drive the offense better than most wingers.  He has his share of flaws, for sure, but I'm more confident in NJ helping him develop than I ever would be in the Oilers getting it done.

I guess my only gripe about the trade is that it was straight up one for one. Like many Oiler fans, I figured he'd be worth a lot more.

Yea he got less than what Hall is worth. From what I have been reading, he wanted to trade RNH for Larsson but Shero wouldn't go for it and the asking price for the top RHD available (Subban, Weber) included Draisatl. Plus, they look like the front runners for Lucic so he probably figured he could afford to make the trade.

I read on another blog that this is the third time Chiarelli has traded a top young forward though (Kessel, Seguin, Hall) and it makes me wonder how he manages to still have a job as a GM in the NHL.

Draft was a good one for American hockey. I'm still a little peeved that the players I was hoping the Devils would draft all got picked just ahead of their turn (Keller, Debrincat, Dineen), but who knows if Shero would have picked them even if they were available.

Except for Keller. If he was available at 11 and Shero didn't grab him, he should get fired :-P

Still just shaking my head at the two terrrible trades by Edmonton and Montreal.  What if, instead, Edmonton just traded Hall to Montreal for Subban?  Edmonton gets its defenseman -- and a superstar at that -- and Montreal gets real value in exchange.

I haven't been following, so please forgive if this is common knowledge by now.  Any word if the Coyotes will still exist a year from now?

Subban > Hall. Hall is second or third best LW in the league depending on how you define Ovechkin's position, but Subban is a top 5 defenseman. Besides D being a more important position than wing, Hall is more like top 20 when you consider all forwards.

For all we know, Chiarelli tried the Hall for Subban angle and Bergevin said no.

Local rumour is Hall was offered for Subbban straight up and Bergevin told Chiarelli to pound salt, and rightly so.

I think a lot of the "this is as bad as the Roy trade" gang are vastly underestimating how good Weber is. It's not like we got a pilon for Subban, Weber is world class and a far better team guy than Subban. I see this as a lateral move that address a lot of team issues with regards to leadership and BALLS. This trade only really hurts 3 years down the line and three years is a LONG time in today's hockey market.

Yea exactly. Bergevin wanted a different type of player who can still put up points. What you lose in speed you get in toughness, and a better goal scorer on the PP.

And Bergevin will rue this trade.  It is inexplicable.  This locker room guy stuff is myth, urban legend, horsecrap.  There's never been any proof that a locker room guy leaving causes the team he leaves to get worse and the team he joins to get better -- independent of his skills.  In any sport.  Same is true of locker room "cancers".  What makes for a good locker room?  Winning.  What makes for a poor locker room?  Losing.  In just about every metric there is, Montreal gave up a better player for a worse player.  And an older one to boot.  Even if we assume they are similar players now, where will they be in three years??  I have no dog in this fight -- just a Sharks fan watching this in disbelief -- and, perhaps, dismay as my team never would have gotten past Nashville without Weber's contributions.  Weber played with Josi last year -- who does he get in Montreal??

Subban

Lucic signs with the Oilers?  I've read the rumblings, but hey, it's the Oilers.  I just think it's crazy.  Hell, I think he's crazy.

Not my favourite player by any means.  A lot of his retaliatory stuff and antics make me cringe.

Having said that, he is exactly the kind of player Edmonton needs.  I hope he lays out Johnny Hockey in the season opener.

Too slow a thug to lay a mitt on Johnny Hockey.  He's on the downside and was a liability to L.A. both because of degrading skills and because he spends too much time in the penalty box.  A shame to saddle McDavid with him.

As far as I'm concerned you can keep that freakin guy out west.

Always a predictable show out that guy when the Bruins would be out of a game.

Johnny Hockey can skate circles around Lucic.
