Often that is not an option, when you have people behind you waiting as well.

True but I almost always play alone. No one is ever waiting on me. If they are its because I'm waiting on the group ahead of me. Often times I'll be finishing my hole while the group ahead is still teeing off. Usually it's at that point when they'll ask if I'd like to play through or join their group. Then I simply say "That'd be great, thanks a ton". Then I'll usually slice one into the woods or over into the adjacent fairway because I'm rushing myself. But its nice to just walk up and take my shots and keep my rhythm going.

Oh I agree. If there is nobody behind me. I prefer the let them finish the hole as well.

I start hitting poor tee shots...

This is the case for me when playing alone. When I play with my instructor in our weekend group if play is slow he says the best thing to do is to think about anything other than golf. Work, women, toys, how mad your wife is going to be when you get home, etc. Of course that's just one pro's opinion, but I do think it works for me. We've only played a few times where it was painfully slow, and each time was a significant improvement over when I played alone and just waited around in frustration.

I do the chip/pitch practice and stay loose.

Same here. ...  If it's a par 4 or par 5 coming up, I will visualize my likely approach shot, and take a couple of practice swings with that club.

And, I drink some water.

Things I do when the pace is slow:

  • Take more time on my shot
  • Engage in casual conversation
  • Look around for lost balls
  • Doodle around, looking nonchalant
  • Stare at the front group, trying to use force to move them along

We had 3 4somes in front and 3 behind and the lead group was playing really slow.
We were on the 4th and could see 5 open holes so my bud drives right over to the guys and politely says "Hey guys, can you pick up the pace a little bit?  We have groups backed up all the way back to the first and you have a bunch of open holes"

They said nothing, barley acknowledged us but man did they speed it up.  By the time we teed off the next hole they were already 3 holes ahead of us.  Not sure if they were playing multiple balls or not but by the way the acted and the fact they didn't say anything, we didn't think they were gonna move like that!  Sometimes a friendly lil nudge works wonders.

If I'm playing with other people, I'll usually just BS about stuff.

If I'm playing alone, I'll usually just open up TST, FB, Twitterm, Instagram, or Snapchat.

I usually play alone in case it gets slow. Easier to skip holes when you are by yourself in a cart, or even walking. If it backs up on every hole, I go to the range or go home. I'm there to play golf, not to watch golf being played. If I wanted to spend my time watching others play golf, there's The Golf Channel.....
