Maybe true, but Phil can choose between the two.  Right now, Tiger does not even have that choice.

Honestly I don't think Tiger cares that much, given what he has already accomplished. You just accept it as part of your life and your priorities change.

And more importantly, I wouldn't care about not having that choice, and given the question is about putting myself in their position, I pick the shorter and more accomplished career.

Phil is healthy and I'll take health over legacy any day.

Hopefully he'll follow Watson's career path and play for years on the Champions Tour and show up for the PGA exemption tournaments as long as he can.

With his RA, I don't think he will be able to play as long as Tom Watson.

Given what the two have accomplished? Option 1. There's nothing else to prove unless you really think 19 is that important, or even reachable, so if anything I see the injuries as a sign that it's time to move on. At the very least it is a good excuse to stop playing if the drive isn't there.

I believe it has to be a grind. You can't just expect to show up at an event and be great. You're still practicing, traveling, making appearances, playing in pro ams, talking to the media, etc. Trying to shoot low scores in 60° rainy weather and 25mph winds seems a lot less enjoyable than kicking it back in Florida doing whatever.

@14ledo81 and @70sSanO both touched on this already, but you're looking at it from a fame/legacy standpoint, whereas I'm looking at it from a "who would I rather be" at this point standpoint.  I would much rather be a multimillionaire who is super famous and can CHOOSE to continue to play golf if I want to (and apparently Phil does, so it can't be THAT much of a "grind") than be a multimillionaire who is super famous and is unable to play even if he wants to after having several surgeries.

I guess you don't count an auto-immune disease as injury. When he was first diagnosed, you could tell it was wearing on him by Sunday. It is not going to get better either. The surgeries stink, but Tiger transcended the sport as a player.

Wasn't aware of that.  Also, forgot about the arthritis too.  But still, I've had a taste of fairly serious back issues and I don't see how either of those can be as bad.

From a who I'd rather be, definitely Phil, he looks like he's living the dream.  Guy is always smiling and just seems to be having a good time.  He also seems really well liked by others on the Tour.

No. If anything Tiger's fame is waning because he is no longer relevant. Phil is still getting on the leaderboards so he is the more visible of the two.

From a "who would I rather be" standpoint, I want to be the guy who can spend a lot of time with his young kids over the guy who can spend less time with his older kids. It just happens that being the golfer with the more accomplished career and the better legacy makes the decision to stay home that much easier for me.

If I had another major to win to complete the career grand slam, I'd be a lot more motivated to keep playing than rest on my laurels.

Doesn't matter what Phil thinks. In this context, it matters what I think, and I see playing and traveling on tour to be a grind, so if I am going to be a multimillionaire golfer, I choose to be the one with the better resume.

Tiger's health is probably decent enough if he stops stressing his body. It's not like the man is disabled. Is it good enough to return to competitive golf? Probably not, but as I mentioned, if I were in his shoes, I don't care about that anyway.

Phil's made just about the same amount of money and always seems to be enjoying what he is doing. The media, the times he wasn't playing all that well, he just seems to enjoy life.

Tiger has had the better golfing career but hates the media part of his job. Really seems to hate it.

I pick Phil because if I were doing their job he more closely resembles how I would want my career to be.

I'm really old school, and very much in the minority here. I voted other. I would have liked to have Tommy Watson's career. He was quite successful playing against the competition he had back then.

Wait.  Let's twist that back around to reality:  Would you rather be forced to retire at age 40 because of a series of debilitating injuries, or keep playing at 46 (when you clearly do not have to be, nor are you really "grinding" - you're setting whatever schedule you want) because you enjoy it and, more importantly, because you can?

Voted for Tiger purely because his career has more wins and majors.  If you asked me about the playing part, I would want Tom Watson's career.  He almost won a major at 59.  I want to be able to play golf till the last day of my life

The life of Phil, but no doubt the career of Tiger. Even though the downfall is bigger, the peaks are also higher (or at least there are more of them).

While I voted for Phil, but mentioned Watson in my earlier post, other would probably be the selection if more people really thought about having a career like Watson, but also Palmer, Nicklaus, or Player.  Since some of the discussion revolves around a the life outside of golf, what is amazing about the last three is the longevity of their marriages.  I'm not saying the length of marriage is a measure of a career, but it does speak of a stable home life.  Gary Player has been married for 60 years.

FWIW, off the course Watson did worse than Tiger IMO. Not only did he cheat on his wife, but he stole another players wife. He also had alcoholism issues. So off the course, he's been a bit rough.

I'd still pick Watson over the others. He had a pretty good track record against Nicklaus. Plus, I don't think any humam is with out fault in some form or fashion. I know I'm not perfect.

Is this a real question? lol

Golf seems to have a lot of puritanical daddy issues going on (i dont think there is another sport that canonizes its figures quite the way golf does) but its Tiger in a heartbeat. Not even close. By every evaluation you can use, Tiger has had twice the career that Phil has managed. Anything else thrown into the equation besides results is just noise.

MOMS are very cool people. It too me 45 years to convince her she was wrong about how perfect she thought I was.  Even then, she wasn't quite sure.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
