Indeed, I never even encountered the idea that wearing shorts is somehow inappropriate for men until I moved up north, to New York City, where it is typical to hear narcissistic fashionistas making absolutist declarations of fictional "rules" based on glamour rather than function.

I have to disagree, the male fashionistas in NY are wearing capri's and what appears to be some form of hot pants which show off less leg but look completely ridiculous on men imo.

They do look ridiculous on men, but this wouldn't bother me in the least.  Have you seen some of the clothing they wear in California?  Again, both of these would cause me to chuckle as I walked by, nothing more, nothing less.  To each his own, their dress has no effect on me whatsoever.

And as if you've answered the question with examples...dress codes exist because people will wear anything they damn well please regardless of it's appropriateness to the occasion. 

I'm ok with shorts to golf, but shorts to a wedding or jeans to a wedding or pajamas to the airport..come on.  Let's all have some decency.

Every golf course in Britain has a dress code and a golden rule that no sports - especially football (soccer) shirts can be worn.

Of course you realize that the very best piece of clothing that I have is my No. 9 Canadiens sweater. Frankly, as much as I like golf, that sweater is too good to play golf in.

I've been to weddings where the bride, groom and the rest of the wedding party were all wearing jeans.  Not because they were too poor or cheap to wear other more traditional wedding attire, but because that's what the bride and groom chose for the ceremony.  Not all of the country is as stuck on appearances as wherever you come from.  We like to think that we judge a person more on his actions than his looks.

This certainly seemed to escalate quickly.  I haven't read a single post saying that personal comfort trumps all.  I think what most people have discussed has fallen well within the norms of acceptable behavior for a specific venue.  Shorts have been accepted on  most golf courses in the US  for at least 45 years (as long as I've been playing).  Hell, shorts are acceptable business attire in Bermuda, when combined with shirt and tie and jacket and appropriate over-the-calf socks. Flip flops have been accepted in casual circumstances for a long time as well.  These types of attire bear absolutely no comparison to the generally unacceptable behavior you mention.

Exactly Rick, as long as people conform to requested dress codes of places or events that have them, no one should care how others dress.

It seems so logical to me.  Every establishment has a right, within reasonable bounds, to determine the standards for use of its facilities.  As a consumer, we should determine (in advance) what those standards are, and either choose to abide with the standards, or go elsewhere.  I was in Australia several decades back, and wanted to play golf.  I found out when I got to the course that I was required to wear over-the-calf length socks with my shorts.  So I bought a pair of socks, and had a great time.

@DaveP043 @Patch I also like the Signs song but grew up on the Tesla version which I like a lot, as Tesla is one of my favorite bands. So that makes me not as old as you two?

I used to be a real snob when it came to fashion but as I've gotten older I realize I really don't care anymore. When it's over 90 with 80 percent humidity I'm wearing swim trunks, a tank top and sandals on the course.

Well, that's kind of a thing, ain't it! Since I've gotten "into" performance fabrics, I've noticed the following. If your shorts don't feature the "sticky, grabby" strip inside the waistband to keep hold of your shirt, bending, stooping, and swinging a golf club tend to make keeping your shirt tucked in a full time job!

To keep from disrobing on the course, I decided to just pull the shirt tail out and go with that. But then, I don't play at Bellerive!
