I can't help but think of parallels between Disney and Apple. Apple manipulating its product line to prevent self cannibalism of its own market share.

I don't think they are doing that.

The crawl and theme (mostly) are gone, all the main characters are dead (which I thought added more depth, but thought Disney wouldn't do), the tight coupling to the saga series.  The original ending kept Jyn alive. Too bad the scenes with the tie fighter and Jyn on the platform and "I'm a rebel, I rebel" are gone.

I like the ending. I like that the writers and directors could not see a way for the main characters to live and didn't try to force it. I like that Disney didn't force them to.

The main characters dying fits episode IV when Leia says many sacrificed to get these plans.

I thought the resistance monologues where a tad melodramatic.

I really liked how the main scientist on the development of the power source built in a relay chain reaction that would destroy the Death Star. It really validates Luke being able to destroy the Death Star by shooting the Photon Torpedoes into the exhaust port.

Well, not quite monologues, but I found these a bit... much:

Heck Lucas was never the best writer either. Luke is a whinny brat for the first movie. Some lines a definitely cringe worthy.

After re-reading the Star Wars Ring Theory, I'm convinced Lucas is a theoretical genius but a practical moron.

Yeah, the thing about Lucas is that he's a brilliant ideas man with no idea how to implement them most of the time. He's at his worst when he's given total creative freedom, and works best under restrictions.
