I love Big John. He has had his ups and downs but he has never been shy about telling the truth. His honesty is and ability to relate to the common man is great. He has had a great career even though he could have won more or won less majors as a matter of fact.

Had dinner with Steve Loy one time and he told a story about John when he coached him at the University of Arkansas. He was a bit out of control then just like he is now. That's just john Daly. That being said I am sure there are more than a few golfers envious of his "wasted" talent. (5 PGA Tour Wins, 2 Major Championships, 3 European Tour Wins, and 1 Champions Tour Win). Some might call that a very successful career.

Like living on whiskey and ramen for 6 months just to cut weight to stay on the team. I heard plenty of stories while living in Fayetteville.

Cigarettes too to curb his appetite. He claims it was his college coach that got him smoking for that reason.

Somewhat well known anecdote about Big John-

"It was during the 2004 Target World Challenge and Daly had just completed the Wednesday pro-am with some friends and was in the clubhouse drinking and telling stories when Tiger Woods walked into the room.

“Tiger’s there in his workout clothes and I said, ‘Tiger come have a beer with us, man,’” Daly recalls.

Woods declined, explaining that he was bound for the gym and one of his ubiquitous workout sessions. Daly persisted, “I go, ‘Man, you don’t need to work out. You need to drink a little bit with us.’”

Woods’ answer is the stuff of legend.

“He said, ‘If I had your talent I’d be doing the same thing you’re doing,’” Daly says. “I’m looking at him thinking ‘you’re crazy, man.’”

I've met John twice both times at a casino. Once I rode an elevator with him and his entourage, he was the biggest prick I'd ever met. About a year later he was playing two $100 machines at the same time. He was surrounded by security. Some lady wanted his autograph and he went above and beyond to please her, posed for pictures, all smiles. I think he's a Dr. Jekill, Mr Hyde type.

He's a legend at Chickasaw Country Club here in Memphis. Before he won the 91 PGA he played there often. Everytime I played there someone would show me a place he'd hit a 350 yard drive, a lake he'd carried, a tree he went over.

Live from the doghouse.

What did he do in the elevator? I'm sure he had a few "DIET COKES" in him.

Probably more than a few. I asked him about Brian Alexander who used to be his caddy, lives in Memphis and runs a public golf course and he just looked at my wife and I and laughed. Then he cussed one of his toadies......in front of my wife. We got out, I'm sure he was going to his suite.

To be honest he does a lot of fine things for various charities around here and as I stated was friendly as heck the next time I dealt with him. Brian has nothing but great things to say about him.

When do we see this guy play these days?

I use old Taylor Made clubs from eBay and golf shops.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
