Avoiding Sales Tax

Let's say you live in Massachusetts, a state that charges 6.25% sales tax. You want to buy the new iPhone 7. 256gb in beautiful jet black, and you're going to buy it full price ($849) upfront. (The item, and even the price don't really matter, I just really want the new iPhone. :-P)

Let's also say you live near-ish to New Hampshire. 30 miles are so. New Hampshire does not charge sales tax. Far enough that there are closer Apple Stores than the one in New Hampshire, but close enough that it's not a full-day trip to drive up there (and that you're not dropping appreciably more money on gas).

Do you go to New Hampshire to buy you're new phone/grill/couch? Or do you stay in Massachusetts?

For the purposes of this, let's say you have no other reason or desire to go to New Hampshire. If you go, it would just be to get whatever you need.

Of course you avoid the tax if it's possible.  The only valid argument against it is if the trip would cost the same or more than the savings.

I grew up in CT, right on the Mass border.  We grocery shopped in Mass and got our gas there. Pretty elementary, unless I'm missing something here.

IIRC, you're supposed to declare items you bought out of state that you use in your home state and pay the sales tax on your tax return, but pretty sure most people "forget" about this come filing time.

No, I don't bother.  I'll choose gas stations or grocery stores because they're on my side of the street even if they're more expensive.  (And I probably won't even notice the price because I'm not looking)

Pass on the iphone, the assistant manage says the iphones are nothing but problems. If you want to drive a little extra, we can play a round at a local track...tax free as well ;-)

I don't mean to pass judgement. I've been "forgetful" myself. I googled NH - Mass - sales tax and it seems like a lot of people go to NH.

I file quarterly, because I buy things online and sometimes they don't charge tax. Though Amazon has done this for awhile now, so that's been helpful.

I don't believe all states require reporting of items purchased outside of the state and some have limits that need to be exceeded before reporting is required.  NY has been rumored to have LEO's writing down NY license plates for cars parked in NJ Malls.

This is a little off-topic but I still see people lining up in front of the Apple store to buy the max number of new iPhones and they're probably sending them to China (I realize I'm profiling a bit here). Guess market "imbalances" will always be there to be taken advantage of whether it be 30 miles or 8,000 miles.

I'm a lot the same way, my time has a value.  Driving an hour or more round trip, plus gas and wear and tear on the car, all to save $50 in tax, I doubt that I'd do that.  Now if it was an enjoyable drive, maybe I'd have a friend along and get lunch in some nice restaurant, then it becomes a different calculation.
