Goals for 2017...

Hi all,im currently getting back into golf regular from having a short break from around last october and through the christmas period,i currently play off 12 and hope in the coming months to regularly shoot to there or thereabouts (ive had rounds of +13,+4,-6,+5..all over the place),im not affiliated to any club as doing a "tour" of all the local tracks i had missed out on after being a member of clubs for the past 3 years or so..consistancy is key this year as i know i have the game to reach single figures, breaking 80 regular is a must..fingers crossed for the next 12 months or so.

Haha you would think so with other scores, no it was genuine..the +13 was in snow covered fairways,(I play any weather) greens only cleared on back 9 but damage was done..the other plus scores were in so so conditions on courses ide never played before, the 6 under was how I usually play when im on and I reckon driver came out the bag 3/4 times max..it was a course I knew, nice day, overcast not much breeze..im playing a course im familiar with today which is a great run (albeit a little boggy in places) so hopefully in the minuses today.

A bit late to the party, but I always struggle with how to frame my goals. It just recently became clear to me that I will just set targets for things I can control, not desired outcomes. So the list becomes:

  1. Stay with an instructor for the entire year. Submit at least one video per month.
  2. Make notes on the lessons and condense to a simple take-away or two. Collate all the lesson results in a simple list of "checkpoints" for review regularly to remind me to stay on track.
  3. Put in a minimum of 5 minutes practice per day, and document on TST. Miss no more than 25 days in the year.
  4. Review the simple take-aways from the lessons and the "checkpoints" prior to range sessions and keep the range sessions focused to those elements. Make those range sessions count, as I've learned I can use a pre-round warmup to "find a swing" fairly easily- no need to just pound balls at the range. Keep the range time to be working on something for the lessons.
  5. Establish an official handicap by June.
  6. Seek out and play three competitions by August.
  7. Exercise at least twice per week, and stretch at least 5 times per week.

If I can do all that, not only will it be the most disciplined I've been with golf BY FAR, but I'll be excited to see how many strokes I can improve, and how well I can hold up under competition. I'll certainly strive to do my best there, but I won't set any specific benchmarks for how good my game might be. Whatever it is, so be it.

My goals for 2017.  First let me provide a little history..  I used to be a scratch golfer.  I played everyday while in the Army in Europe (A perk).

I suffered a shoulder injury that I believe caused my wicked slice with almost all of my clubs(still hit PW and 9i well).  I went from winning tournaments

to not making the cut and out of frustration and anger quit.  Well... 25yrs later I am retired and need exercise, so pick up the game again with a couple

of air park buddies.  Now my HI is 35+ again and I still have the wicked slice.  So here are my goals.

1.  Lower HI to below 30

2.  Correct my swing to improve my drives and long irons.

3.  Break 90 at least once.

4.  Beat my 2 golf partners.

5.  Play my club's Senior event and play well.

6.  Reduce my putting to 2 putts.  Currently averaging 3.5 putts per hole.

7.  Get and read LSW.

8.  Video and upload my swing to the thread.

9.  Get Gamegolf.

10.  Work with club pro.

I think that is enough.  So far this year I have gone from 115 to 108 avg.  That is in the last 4 rounds playing one to two times per week.

I went and looked back at my 2016 goals before I commented in this thread. I did get lucky and shoot a round in the 70's but didn't really improve much with my longer irons. I also had a strech in the middle of my season where I really struggled with my driver. My 2017 goals are similar. I want to be more consistent off the tee and with my long irons (6i through 3w). I also would like to lower my handicap. Last year was my 1st year establishing a cap.  I'm going to try to get to the range more often this season. I was inconsistent on how often I got to the range. I'm also going to start working on my swing everyday at home once the weather allows it. I would like to play a min of 4 times a month this season.

Main goals

full shots swing through well and finish-in past had problems with full swing tightening up and forcing the club through impact

short game practice some to avoid rust/lack of feel-I tend to be too lazy to go out and practice to maintain my feels sometimes

i have no particular handicap goals

Strategy goal-play boring golf fairways and greens

Here are my 2017 goals.

I want to get my game back to scratch! After remodelling completely my swing due to back problems I feel like I am back to where I was (or better) ball striking wise. It's been 7 years since I've played scratch golf, in the last six years I've played between 0 and 15 games a year.

What I need to do to get there.

  1. Play more: 25-30 games this year.
  2. Get back to competitive play, money games (Practice becomes more goal oriented)
  3. Improve short game ( I'm going to dedicate 75% of my practice around the green due to my back problems I can't hit many balls max 100 per practice )
  4. Break my golf club scoring record, was almost there last year -6 after 15. Had a 8 footer for eagle at 16... 3 putted... finished double 17, double 18 ) Took a month to play a good round after that meltdown. Next round was my worst: A beautiful 96.
  5. Win club championship.

I don't feel like all this is wishful thinking, I do believe I have a shot at it. Just need to stick to my short game practice plan.

I have a very specific goal for 2017, and that is to be a single digit handicap.  trending towards a 7 towards the end of the summer.   This is a continuation of a goal I gave myself last year.   For the first time last summer, I decided to really put effort into improvement.   I started the season at just above a 16 index.   by July I had lowered that to a 14, and I ended the summer with a 12.5.   Progress is undoubtedly being made.

This winter I hit balls about once a week (which I have never done in the winter before), and I am ready to begin the 2017 season on the right foot.  I am getting fit for a new set of irons next Tuesday, and the hope is that with proper fitted clubs and moving from a game-improvement iron to a players iron, I will be able to get a bit more feed back from my clubs, making range sessions more productive and ultimately, making my ball flight a bit more consistent.

Thought this might be the place to mention this. It seems that dedicating the crummy winter months to revamping my game and really improving is paying off. I used to be a regular mid-90s player. Late last year I got back with the local pro I hadn't seen in many years and signed up for series of lessons including my son. We are about 2/3 through them. Made a few swing changes and pounded many of buckets at the local range at night to try to engrain them. Practiced putting and chipping, etc. Oh...and my little boy's swing - pro said, "I'm not changing that". It's beautiful. Mine wasn't. Anyway, I had my first real round of golf last Sunday. Played a tough course, but one of my favorites. I was keeping score but didn't add it up until just before teeing up on 18. I realized, to my surprise, that if I parr'd 18 I was going to shoot an 81. I was both shocked and thrilled. I got a bogey, mainly because my tendonitis acting up (due to much practicing...haha). But, was happy to see the improvement. My goal, as mentioned earlier to the round, was to shoot 80 this year.

Custom fit RBZ irons. Taylormade RBZ driver. Some crappy old high-bounce Macgregor wedge and an even older Mizuno 5 wood. Haven't settled on a ball yet - still looking. Decades of football, weightlifting and boxing came together to create the world's worst golfer. I'm slowly correcting that now.

For now my goal is bogey golf.  I'm retiring in a couple months, so I'll be playing more instead of being limited on weekends where its busier and more expensive.  I've been working strictly at the range on my days off and my swing is becoming more consistent.  Last time I played 18 holes was about 3 months ago and I approached it with the mindset that bogeys are fine.  Just don't compound a bad shot with another trying to do something I'm not good at.  I shot a 93 which wasn't my best but a little better than normal.  I'm usually in the mid to upper 90's.  I had no triple bogeys for the first time ever but not quite enough pars to offset the doubles.

I believe I can reach that goal by limiting the mishits.  There is nothing more frustrating that sitting 150 yards out with your second shot, a clean lie, no obstructions, and you shank it.  Now I'm sitting at more than 100 yards on my 3rd shot and maybe not a clean lie.  That is the part of my game I'm trying to shore up.  Its getting better but I need more time at the range to develop the muscle memory. When I shank it at the range I usually know why and I correct the next swing.  But there are no do overs on the course.

This is why golf, and getting better at golf, is so damn hard.  From the sounds of it, 150 out from the fairway is not a difficult shot for you, but it's all in your head.  If I could stand confidently over every ball and swing confidently every time, I'd be a 5 handicap.  But, as it is, I can never predict what's going to be going on in my head as I approach a ball, and I constantly mishit balls that are automatic on the range.

With the mild winter and playing 12 days in the Sunshine State last month, I'm on pace to possibly play 250 rounds in 2017.
Other objectives are developing a better aggressive driver swing and corrections to a poor habitual swing developed from previous seasons.
I also plan to devote more practice time to maintain good ball striking, putting, bunker and short game basics.
Use my :gamegolf: each and every round this year for recording the stats into a new Game Improvement program I've written.
Analyze the data each month, weakness and strengths and track my trends.
Get back to recording video of my swing on a regular basis, minimum once a month.
Hopefully play better this year.

Shoot par (yeah right) it's a goal

play 75 rounds.

Sorry I forgot to elaborate.

Goal one: really work on my full swing motion, I've gotten off to a good start with it, I have really worked on my posture which has helped my balance.

Goal two: Self explanatory

Goal three: I'm a little behind on getting a Forward Tees tournament set up... That will help with more fun.

Goal four: is related to goal one.

Goal five: Either make a pilgrimage out to Erie or something.

I have a couple of goals to add on that I missed the first time.

Goal 6: I'd like my driver carry distance to be longer but I need to get my spin down... However, since I've been working on my posture, balance, and set-up my distance has gotten better with my irons on the LM, it seems I am a full 10-12 yards longer on average with my irons. (We shall see how it translates outdoors)... I'm averaging 180 carry with my 6-iron on the LM... Not demos in the shop, my EXi 6-iron... Which in my opinion is a great sign...

Goal seven: Organize another outing with the Upstate NY guys in the late spring (late May-mid June)... Even if I have to get a hotel in BFE, NY to do it.

    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
