How do you grip and swing your putter?

  1. 1. What technique do you use to grip and swing your putter?

    • Baseball grip, facing the ball
    • Standard Overlap, facing the ball
    • Standard Interlocking, facing the ball
    • Reverse Overlap, facing the ball
    • Left hand low (or right hand if a lefty), facing the ball
    • Long putter without anchor, facing the ball
      0
    • Belly without anchor, facing the ball
      0
    • Side saddle, split grip, facing the hole (long, belly or standard)
      0
    • Forearm braced (Kuchar), split grip, facing the ball
      0
    • Claw-type grip, split grip, facing the ball
      0
    • Anchored putting stroke (the heck with the USGA/R&A)
    • One handed, facing the ball
      0
    • Something else - describe if possible

@Vinny Cap's thread got me thinking.  Some years ago I read that Dave Pelz considered the belly putter (anchored) to be the "best" putting approach based on a statistical study he had performed. Next best was left hand low.  I do not know how many versions of putting he studied and now anchoring is not permitted by the Rules.  Conceivably, Mr. Pelz might have discovered an even better technique.

As the poll demonstrates, there are a lot of ways to swing a putter and I suspect the list is far from complete.  I have tried a few times to use "left hand low" but I've used the reverse overlap grip for 5+ decades and I will likely stick with that until I can no longer play.

How about the rest of you?

I changed to left hand low several months ago. This after putting normal right handed for decades. One of my better decisions on my golf game. After several rounds of recorded statistics,  the LHL grip is saving me 2.8 putting strokes per green. I now average a little over 29 putts per round, which of corse is some what mis- leading. That said, 29+/- putts is better than 32+/- putts when used with my same tee to green game.

I originally made the change after some surgery to correct a problem in my left wrist which was screwing up my putting at that time.

As for what putting stroke/swing I use, have no idea. I know it works, and that all I need to know about that. Also, my putter is fitted to my grip, and stroke.

I use the conventional grip (reverse overlap I think it is). I tried left-hand low for a while early this past season and got great results within 10-15ft, but couldn't control the speed nearly as well as my standard grip while lagging, so there had to be a distance at which I switched grip, and I could never figure out where, because as I was making short putts left-hand low at increasing distances, confidence grew and I was switching grips at a greater distance, which of course would impact lag putting from close (say 20-25ft). I properly ought to give it another fair try...

Reverse double overlap isn't a poll option, but that's how I putt.

What option should I choose, @bkuehn1952?

Reverse double overlap - grip up the palms of both hands, mostly, and the index and middle finger on my left hand on top of the pinkie/ring finger of my right hand.

I'm struggling to envision that.  Can you post a pic?

I answered the first one "Baseball grip, facing the ball" not that I haven't tried everything else.

I putt with a revers overlap, grip in the palms, wrists feeling like they're uncocked. One thing I have changed in the last couple years is having my left index finger pointing straight down rather than curling under the grip.

This ^^. Having it in the palms is key for me.

Standard interlock for me, though I always threaten to change after a few bad putts.

I like the look of that reverse double overlap, though. I might try that out.

Another reverse double overlap here. Although sometimes a reverse single overlap, depends on the day.

I also play the ball up in my stance to promote a slightly ascending strike that is starting to decelerate. Nice and pendulummy. :-P

The first time I picked up a putter (without ever having played) and swung it is the very same grip and swing I use to this very day. I essentially grip as per normal with my left hand and then with the right hand I wrap it around in a split grip and use my index finger to anchor the shaft very low down on the grip, the index finger rests beyond the grip against the actual shaft. My swing is a shoulder based swing - over the ball with varied length to control distance. I have never had an issue with putting, it is the most comfortable part of my game and it is the only part where I just picked up a club and used instinct to figure out, there might be something in that you know!

Edit: I just realised that actually I have changed one thing, and that is stopping behind the ball to correctly align myself and the ball, but I really don't faff around that much, I ensure the arrows point at the hole, get behind the ball for a peek at the line and hit it with confidence.

I use cross handed grip and mostly face the ball and putter head but sometimes I will face the hole for my stroke when I have  a short left breaker above the hole

I went mostly left hand low except on really long putts this year and I became more consistent. My second to last time out about half way through and for no real reason with my left hand I put the grip between my index and middle finger. I got really hot the rest of the round. I went out the next day tried it for the whole round. My results were really good ( for me) again. I've only been able to try it again on the carpet in the basement but who knows maybe I found something. Then again maybe not.

    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
