My Swing - rehmwa

  • I had an existing My Swing but can't find it.  I think it was long before the site switchover.  So the original is gone....I think....Erik reminded me last year for an update....rightly so.  here it is
  • I'd like to just open this up for general comments - I have great rounds, then I just have trash - would like more great rounds....for these vids, pretty representative, though the face on contact wasn't very good, the swing looks typical
  •
  • 1 - After a whole winter (2015) of lengthening my backswing, video shows that it's TOO much and now am struggling with getting it back to less than parallel at the top.  Shorter has helped me improve my percent of swings that get good contact. drills or advice here?  for me, the 'feel' of nearly vertical gives me just short of parallel, full swing 'feels' more like a big chip - that's weird, and kind of messes with my takeaway rhythm if I think about it too much (like my swing is 'rushed' and short)...
  • 2 - I'm also interested in my wrist angle and what it should be at various points in my swing...i have no idea.
  • 3 - I need to do a lot more face drills, but I've gotten good advice and drills on that from this site already.  I rather focus on 1 and 2...
  •
  • When I pull left, I find thinking about a thorough follow through fixes it.  If not that, then I usually have too straight a right arm at address and relaxing fixes it.
  • When I make poor contact (thin or fat), I've found that remembering to push out my chest/pull my shoulders back helps a ton
  •
  • I used to have hair

I've been Playing Golf for: 38 years.  But lets count only about the last 10 or so since I took a break after college (years and years ago)
My current handicap index or average score is: probably around a 9,  been as low as a 4, but that was a magical season...
My typical ball flight is: I shape as needed, but I like to hit a draw with short irons and a light fade for longer clubs.  I'm more comfy with the draw, but with longer clubs the fade thought seems to give more success.  My distances are pretty consistent when contact is clean.  I haven't done a lot with up and down lofting (controlability) except at the range, that's fun - I'll explore that later once I have better face control.
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Bad or sporadic contact.  Maybe taking more defined divots.  Goal is to have more of those days where I'm hitting greens (GIR) - those are the fun days.

THANKS

Here are a few things I see.

1. You look like you stand a bit away from the ball there. I would stand about 3-4 inches closer to the ball. Also, watch your head. It's too upright there. You should be looking at the ball straight on more than down the bridge of your nose.

2. You are all arms in the backswing. Notice how much right knee flex you maintain at the top of the swing. This is also why you see a bit of a sway with your swing in the FO view from A1 to A2

Thanks, I like your 2nd comment especially, I don't get much hip turn on the backswing and can try a few drills to find a better feel for that.  I suspect in my goals to improve my contact, I've started taking out motion where ever I could.  I've sacrificed a small bit of distance for that (not much, really, but I think it's measureable) - maybe this ties out.

I'll check my distance to the ball, but my arms feel comfortably hanging, not out in front (at least not by that many inches).

The chin comment resonates, I got chin up from a previous instructor, but Dave's points in the thread make a lot of sense too - especially for an improved contact goal.

THANKS a ton, good input.  I'll also get some comparative videos, maybe of (recent) Adam Scott, or Luke Donald - the links you gave me shows those guys might be a good swing to do side by sides considering where I'm re-starting,

Hey saevel25 = So the season is over and I'm back in the winter practice range.  So now taking this advice to heart and it'll be one of my few winter items to work on - probably only this and continuing to shorten my backswing a bit more.  Started to open a bit more torso coilup on my backswing.  Finding the feel that gives the target mechanics/picture I'm looking for.

Initial results are promising for sure - the distance from getting more coil in my torso clearly is significantly longer too.  (comparing good contact with my 'more restricted' takleaway vs good contact with this 'more coiled up' takeaway.)  Percentage of good contact doesn't seem affected, despite this being a 'new' thing where's I'd expect more thins and thicks whenever I make changes.  Fortunately it's small adjust and easy to process.  The range also has a swing mirror in addtion to me having the Ubersense app for video - that helps too - I'm watching my right hip and how it moves as part of warmup.

I have to train on it quite a bit more, but I like what I'm seeing so far.  Will post a new video in a month or so when it takes.  thanks for the feedback.
