Right for most golfers that's the most fun part to see the ball GO FAR. You have a large club head, get to tee the ball up and have the biggest target.

Hitting the ball off the turf is definitely the hardest part of the game. I actually think beginners or occasional golfers should be able to tee the ball up anywhere. Obviously they can already do that but not have it be seen as "bad".

And then there's me. Putting the ball on a peg seems to bring out the worst in me.  I seem more comfortable playing from the turf, yet when I try it on the tee, I inevitably screw it up.  I think it's the tee box that gets me - some sort of voodoo or hex attached to the ground in that area on all golf courses.

some have found a lower tee height works better and often to their surprize.

I use a shorter tee when hitting my 3W-PW when teeing off. Probably about 3/8-1/2 inch off the turf.

My driver is probably 1-1/2 + inch off the turf.

Of course there have also been times when I tee'd off without using a tee.

I only tee my driver up an inch at most as it is.  I've never been able to play from a tall tee.  FW woods I tee like irons, right at the grass height.  I know it's all in my head.

I think the smartest thing for them to do is just go play and don't worry about a score. Play for the enjoyment of the game and with their buddies. Getting out and forgetting problems at home or at work and just enjoy a beautiful day at a park like course and get some exercise.

I've never been able to do this.  The whole point of golf is to put the ball in the hole with the fewest strokes possible.  To take that off the table would leave me with no reason for playing.  I can go for a walk to get exercise and not pay $30 and up to do it.  Good or bad, I'm still there for the score, and I'll still have more fun than just taking a walk no matter what happens.

For you.

Others enjoy being outdoors with friends and getting a little exercise, being away from their wife and drinking some beer, hitting an occasional great shot… something else not listed, or any combination of those things.

I've played and enjoyed "golf" without worrying about the score I'm shooting. I imagine almost everyone has at one (or many) time or another.

BINGO! I and my golf buddies just enjoy getting out. Especially with the Winters we have! It's a delight. Once the weather straightens out and we get on our games, we also enjoy competing. Against each other and against the course.

You know what else we enjoy? The needle! We love trying to put a skull job on each other.

And Blackjack, I didn't see anyone trying to disrespect you here. There were some disagreements, but also some agreements. Heck, we'll play different tees on different holes depending on how they set up for us. And on some holes I'll have a "personal par". Especially on a really long par 4 where I'd need my Sunday best drive and approach to reach the green. I'll decide to play it like a par 5. If I make 5 I'm happy, If I manage a 4 I'm ecstatic!

Plus, there are any number of tees to play. Golf can be very malleable. It's all in what floats your boat!

I didn't either, nor did I intend any offense. I never thought I was being adversarial, but opinionated, like everyone else. Not a big deal.

The whole point of a forum is to present ideas and opinions.

You did exactly as intended, and you got responses from people all over the world too!

Your thread was very successful.

    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
