I had 3 contenders today... all on consecutive holes.

1) 10th hole.  I had hit a solid 4 iron off the tee and found a fairly flat (slightly downhill compared to the rest of the hole) lie.  I had 141 to the stick... and it play downhill about a club.  I played my 9 iron to drift off to the right because of the downhill lie... and it did perfectly.  The ball landed 2 feet behind the flag, bounced once and spun back to about 3 feet.  Unfortunately, I didn't make the super-quick, slippery downhill birdie putt and had to settle for par.  I tried the putt 2 more times before giving up.

2) 11th hole.  My drive was a bit off the heel of the driver and low.  It ran out but left me 202 yards to the flag.  The ball was a little below my feet.  The only club I was comfortable with hitting from that position was my 4 iron, which is usually a club I will draw.  I played the ball back in my stance just a bit, aimed a little left of center on the green and hit a perfect, low fade that landed on the front of the green and released.  A solid two-putt led to another par.

3) 12th hole.  This is a par 3 that was playing 188 yards.  There's trouble right, long and left.  I hit a decent 5 iron that bounced off a mound and finished behind the left bunker, pin-high.  I was extremely short-sided.  The pin was on the left side by about 4 steps, leaving me no room to work with.  I opened my 58 degree wedge and played a pitch over the bunker that landed about a step on and dribbled out.  I was left with 3 feet.  I made that for par.

The rest of the round was really unremarkable... but those shots felt good to pull off.

Only was able to play one round this week due to terrible conditions.  On the 18th hole I hit a 9 iron to 2 feet for a tap in.

I only played once this week, but I shot stood out from the rest.  This is a classic old course with large majestic trees that line the fairways.   The trees are so huge, you can play out from them, but you have to be very creative and be able to manufacture shots.

It's an uphill par4.......in the treeline.  I had 140yds up hill with big trees in front of me.   I had an alley, but had to keep the ball really low...  I punched a little low "back foot" 6' iron that never got more than 5 feet from the ground...I was playing into the setting sun and liked the shot, but had no clue where the ball ended up.   The ball came to rest about 6' behind the cup.  I had a slick 6 footer... with 2' of break..... made the putt.  had I missed, it would have been all for naught!  LOL

Dogleg left hole.  I was just short of the dogleg about 2 feet in the short rough off of the fairway.  I had a tree about 25 feet in front of me if i wanted to go for the green.  I took a 7-iron and lo and behold cleared the tree with a nice fade and was about 10 feet from the hole.  Missed the birdie :(

Tough to pick.  Friday and Sunday rounds were better than usual.

Friday - 308 dogleg left, can't see the green.  It's a layup hole.  Feeling confident, I wanted to go at it - draw driver.  Ended up 20 yards from the hole in the first cut.  Still couldn't get up and down.  Although, maybe not so special, I made the exact same shot on Sunday on a similar hole.

Sunday - 328 hard dogleg left - can't hit away as there is water short of the green.  3 wood draw to the corner - probably too much.  So the approach shot is on the left and it held up in the rough (good thing, if it rolled I likely would have been fishing the ball out).  So, hard side hill lie, 110 away.  Up and up and moving to the right.....  Put it to 3 feet for birdie.  The reason this one is special for me is I'm just recently STARTING to figure out how much to adjust for side hill lies.  And this is actually a tough hole, the green is tricky too.

Sunday - Legends - Hole 13, 182 yd Par 3.

This hole is over water and forced carry all the way to the front of the green.  wind blowing directly in our face at about 20mph.

I pulled out my 6-iron.  Then I watched one of our bigger hitters put a good swing on a 6 iron, and dunk his ball about 5 yds short of the green.  I walked back to my bag and grabbed my 5 iron.  then, the wind gusted a bit.  so I walked back and grabbed my 4-iron (which I hit about 215 with no wind).

I stepped up to the ball, reminded myself "when it's breezy swing easy" and put a perfect swing on that 4-iron.   ball flew directly over the pin, landed and stopped about 12 ft behind the pin.   (i missed the putt because, of course I did).   We had 8 guys out there in two groups.   Everyone else in my group ended up coming up short.   When we got back to the clubhouse, I found out that all 4 players in the other group came up short as well.

Two good shots from my 9 hole round yesterday

1st hole, drove into the left rough, but still had a line to the pin, 90 yards out, ball landed about 5 feet in front of the pin and rolled to 1 foot for the easy tap in birdie.

8th hole, my approach shot from 150 went long over the green but was only a few inches into the rough, still was about 20 feet from the flag. Didnt feel comfortable chipping from the spot I was in, and it was too thick to putt, so I used my 3 wood, choked all the way down, used my putting stroke motion and put the ball within a foot for the easy tap in par. My playing partners were quite confused seeing me get out my 3 wood at first, but they were impressed with the result, as was I!

I was playing my home course with my wife and hit a good drive on the first but up the left side of the fairway. The green on the first slopes from left to right an the front third slopes away from you. The hole location was on the front left so my left fairway location was not ideal.

I had 72 yards to the flag and I knew to get it close I needed to hit it high as well as put spin on it. I chose my 56° wedge and played it up in my stance to get more height and held it off to keep the toe from closing so I could slip under it to get the spin I wanted.

As soon as I made contact I knew it was good. It landed a few feet on the green, took two hops and then disappeared with the faintest click. It was my first eagle on #1. It was also the first hole out of the year and the first hole out my wife has witnessed.

Second shot on 9 at Downing today.

I'd felt something (not worth describing) wrong on my backswing off the tee, but aren't playing enough to think quickly enough to stop, so I hit a sweeping pull-draw well left to the middle of 10 fairway. A guy in the fairway had 201 to the flag, so I figured I had about 215-220.

I gripped down on a hybrid, and had to get over some trees between the fairways. I hit a dead straight bullet and put it to 25 feet on the green for a realistic birdie putt. Heck, it was closer than the 8-iron or so I usually have to hit to the green with a good tee shot.

Drove a 325 yard par 4 there's a ridge that if you make it over it kind of feeds down to the hole well I tagged one and put it to about 20ft away pin high 2 putted for bird. Probably the 40th or so time I've played that hole but the first time I've driven it.

There's a par 4 I have trouble with that usually has a downhill lie for the approach shot. Yesterday it was a 170 yard shot. I went with a 4H to get higher launch and it was a perfect high, slight fade to about 20 feet.

Mid Am Tournament. Hole 11 - Par 5 - 570 yards, 3rd shot from 100 yards from a fairway bunker. Hit a low sand wedge that first bounced 10 yards short of the hole and the 2nd a few yards back of it on a big slope stopping the ball in the place (slope + lots of spin), then rolls down the slope for a tap-in birdie.
A playing partner waiting to play his 3rd shot besides to the green clapped at me :D.

170 yard par three, hit an 8 iron to 20 ft. It's the best shot moreso because the swing felt like a better one.

Made an eagle 2 from about 180. First ever hole out from the fairway. I was just trying to hit the center of the green - hole was front right - but I pushed it a bit and it drew right below the hole and it hopped in. Was playing a match, too, and this was a walk off eagle for the win on 18.

Managed to hole out for par on two holes yesterday. Found myself a foot off the green both times. Didn't help much for the other 17, but it didn't rain.

Flushed my best drive of the year a few days back.  Unfortunately I airmailed the green on my second into the par 5 and had a nasty lie.  Still, the drive was a perfect high draw with a lot of carry.  The hole is flat for about 250 then goes downhill.  If you can carry the hill and bunker on the right you can get a bit of rollout.

A 140 yard par 3 that plays downhill and I hit my 9 iron with about 80% power with a slight fade to about 12 feet away. Wasn't enough to win nearest to the pin but just the hit itself was amazing. Never felt the ball on the club and the sound it made on impact was just perfect. Don't get many of those so. The birdie putt bounced out (too much speed as it broke downhill), but I still made par.

    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
