  1. 1. Which category describes your game at the moment?

    • Just starting out. Golf is new to me, and I'm devouring it all, trying to make sense of the information, and I'm sure progress will come.
      0
    • Plateau. I've been playing a while, but can't seem to make any progress- oh well, I guess this is it.
    • Arrived and pleased. I've been playing a while, and I can get around a course. My game travels, and I can probably maintain it here if I just play regularly.
    • On the cusp. I feel like breakthroughs are right around the corner. This time, my handicap will dip by a few strokes- I can feel it!
    • Backsliding. I hate golf. How much can I get for my set, I wonder.
    • Dormant. I'll pick back up another time and see where I am and make decisions about how hard I need to work from there.
    • Other? Explain.

Thank you for your honesty. I hope you are able to find the pleasure in playing, just for yourself. It won't be easy, but it is a worthy goal. Best of luck.

Thanks Don.

Right now when I go out to the course, I play golf like I have something to prove to the world.

When I take a shot, I know exactly what motion I'm going to make, and ensure my setup complements delivering the club face in a way that makes sense to me.

I know my history: OOB drives, topped 3w's, hooking long irons, taking too little club on awkward lies, over cooked straight draws with mid irons, pitches that come up short, and pushing shorter putts.

Every time I encounter these situations, I address them, and remind myself of my specific solutions. Driver is obviously the elephant in the room, but all I can do is be aggressive, commit to the drive, and advance the ball. If I hit a bad drive after that, it's just water off a ducks back.

Likewise when I have a shot I feel comfortable with - I relax, and try to be creative. While that means I mostly play golf like an automaton, I revel when I can shape an 8 iron around a tree, or nail a tricky lag putt.

This is the first time in about 15 years where I've gotten more disciplined to practice right and try to play some more again so I'm optimistic I can improve some this year.

My swing is getting close. My game is still non-existent, at least until I get my driver solved. I have a question for the crew. I know about the proportions for practicing full swing and short game, but what are the percentages for practice-play? I'm fortunate to be able to get out more than one or two days a week, so that makes it not a choice of whether to practice this week or play the next three weeks without practice.

If this makes sense.

I am getting worse by the day. I have gone back to the first few months of my golfing life, and I have lost all ability to make contact with the ball. I either top it, whack the ground so hard it hurts my back, or hit the ball off of the toe. What the hell has happened ?????????????????

In my bag (Motocaddy Light)

Taylormade Burner driver, Taylormade 4 wood, 3 x Ping Karsten Hybrids, 6-SW Ping Karsten irons with reg flex graphite shafts. Odyssey putter, 20 Bridgestone e6 balls, 2 water balls for the 5th hole, loads of tees, 2 golf gloves, a couple of hand warmers, cleaning towel, 5 ball markers, 2 pitch mark repairers, some aspirin, 3 hats, set of waterproofs, an umbrella, a pair of gaiters, 2 pairs of glasses. Christ, it's amazing I can pick the bloody thing up !!

I'm at "Other".  My game is progressing slowly.  I haven't hit a plateau nor do I think I'm on the cusp of any major breakthrough.

Hello, new to the site, just another golf junkie. Played 27 holes today, it was my first round with new clubs, Nike Vr_S 2.0s. I played pretty well still can't hit my driver to save my life, I tee off with my 3 wood most holes it's a consistent 275, sometimes I get it out there 280. Did hole 3 15 foot putts, that was a plus.

CUSP I'm the old guy who came back to golf a couple or more years ago, got serious, took lessons, practice 2-3 times a week and play on Saturdays. So, before back surgery shot two tournament rounds in the high 80's; otherwise high 90's low 100's. After resting up from back surgery for two+ months, I am at it again. We have had great weather in North Texas so I'm on the same practice, lessons and play routine (all for healthy exercise of course ). I do think I am on track this year to start shooting in the 90's consistently and my goal is to have at least 3 rounds in the 80's before the end of summer. I somehow knew that in today's round with the BombSquad. HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL. -Marv

Can never figure out where to post stuff.  I like to discuss what i am doing right and what I am doing wrong and trying to figure out why.  Ive been working on fixing the over the top swing.  While fixing it,  I have now developed too flat of a swing and am leaving my club face open and blocking shots. Fix one problem and develop another one while doing so.  Found a drill that might help. Placing a driver cover in front (inside and lined up with the inside foot).  Avoiding this cover while swinging will keep the swing from being too flat.  Will have to swing more downward (while not going over the top LOL).  I'm having a hell of time trying for a good swing.

This thread was just a poll to get a sense of how many of us are feeling like improvement is close, or whatever else regarding where you feel your game is at.  I left it vague as to whether one answers for the week, the month, the year, or just some general sense.

I saw you posted in the "What did you score today?" thread. That one is also not for general discussion about your golf troubles. That is for a specific score, and not really to discuss details of problems.

The best thread for discussion like you posted above is the "bogey golfers only thread"

That's a great thread to get others' opinions on what is ailing you. Good place to commiserate with others.

Plus you can create new threads on specific things any time. Hope that helps.

Edit: left out the best thread for specific swing issues: a My Swing thread

"Other" vote here.

Still hit good shots but not consistent.  Can run off a handful of decent holes then put up an ugly number for 2 or 3 holes.

Actually, I was on the course a couple of days ago and I saw my game at Hollywood Gaming across the street. It was trying to hawk a couple of my E6 balls for another pull on the slot machine. ... What a loser.

I voted for "backsliding". I switched instructors and we are now rebuilding (almost) from the ground up. Although I improved a lot under my previous coach, we failed to groove a consistent swing for me. I feel like I still have some fundamental problems that are being missed and I wanted a fresh set of eyes.

Got out today and shot an 83. Better than I thought I would after playing only twice in a 4 or 5 month time period.

Admittedly one or two round is a pretty small sample size, but for those two rounds I would also have to put them in the "other" category, under the sub-heading "better than expected".

    • Just want to share a quick update with everyone. I went to the range the week before last, even though I took it easy no significant pain occurred just a slight twinge when I swung my #4 hybrid. The most encouraging news was no soreness the next morning. However I think switching back to graphite shafts is definitely gonna happen, my mp15's were fitted with X shafts and having something lighter will help.
