Two strokes seems excessive for playing a wrong ball

Well, Don't get too high and mighty there. I have a buddy who, just last year, played the wrong ball no less than 3 times! The most he knows when he tees off is that he is playing a Titleist of some number! Is it an DT, an NXT, an NXT Tour, DT Solo, Velocity, what? He sees the "Ti" of the Titleist and that's his ball!

Last year we hit our drives in close proximity, he saw the "Ti" and pronounced that it was his ball. He hit his shot and we advanced to the next ball about 5 yards up. I took a good look at it, and it was not mine!

EDIT: As far as penalty strokes go, what are you talking about? Here's my divot. Just drop a ball around here and play to the green, then I'll play my ball!

This is also what I mean about 90% of amateurs not giving a single crap about the rules!

Huh?

If you have played a wrong ball you still need to play your ball. You aren't dropping one.

I think he meant that his Buddy played the wrong ball - i.e. Buckeye's ball - and since Buckeye's ball was not immediately recoverable, he was entitled to substitute another ball and drop where it was incorrectly played from.  The Buddy played his ball where it was found and added 2 strokes for the privilege.  That's how I read the post anyway.

Yeah, that makes sense. :-)

You got it, Fourputt! I went back and re-read my post and realized that I didn't make that perfectly clear. I guess I was a bourbon or two too far gone! My buddy hit my ball. So, I dropped near his divot, but the bone of contention was that he didn't want to take any penalty strokes! I'm very easy to get along with, and we were playing for a beer for crying out loud! But what's right is right! I finally convinced him to take a one stroke penalty, and won the hole. To be honest, I'm not familiar enough with the rules to know that it should have been a two stroke penalty!
